Should I be worried about TD?

Posted by portage on June 27, 2005, at 17:28:48

More and more I've been having large muscle spasms mostly in my legs and abdoman, sometimes my face and arms; they don't really bother me but its gotten to the point that it's noticabe to other people. I'm taking 50 mg Seroquel; should I worry that this is tardive dyskinesia? I thought TD was very uncommon with the newer antipsychotics, especially at such a low dose? Could it be something else?

Hi.

TD usually surfaces around the face and neck first. Seroquel has one of the lowest incidences of EPS. Still it might be causing a temporary dystonia. This would disappear as soon as the drug is stopped. Abilify is perhaps the only other AP for which the risk of TD is as low.

Right now, I don't have an explanation. Are you taking any other medication? How long have you been taking Seroquel?

I got TD from aminsulpride and olanzapine. Seroquel gave me dystonia (though I was on 800mg). So the new drugs DO have a risk of TD but its not as bad as the typical neuroleptics. That being said, my Aunty who is schizophrenic has been on Stelazine for over 20 years and doesnt have TD. Seriously I dont think anyone can predict if it will happen or not. Mine went away btw and it had to do with my jaw and tongue. Howcome your taking neurolepics if you dont mind me asking? 50mg is such a low dose though I wouldnt worry but I guess if your concerned you should ask your doctor.

Take care
