info on prednisone for (atypical?) depression...

Posted by iforgotmypassword on June 26, 2005, at 14:43:43

hi. i am at my wits end. i got some prednisone from a friend and am not feeling like waiting for one of my doctors to get around to considering prescribing it or something else for me. if i take some now will it screw up my cortisol test tomorrow? was there any good documentation of this use of prednisone other than the one on biol. psychiatry? any info i would really appreciate. i'm sorry i am so ungrateful, i feel as if any hope of ever having a life has been ruined and every day i wake up in the morning is just another punch in the face. i'm very desperate to find something i can do.

I've never heard of predisone helping depression.
As a matter of fact, I've been on it before and it seemed to cause depression for me.. it could've been I became depressed because it made me want to eat Debbie Cakes in mass quantities and caused moon pie face, but who knows? lol

Prednisone will perhaps make some depression better (atypical) and some worse (melancholic, bipolar).

Oh my god! Why would you want to take Prednisone? I had to use it once for a poison oak rash and I was out of commission for DAYS! Couldn't sleep, couldn't think, felt sick all over. I was miserable. And from what I understand about that drug, it totally throws off your hormones and can even cause further problems like yeast infections, sugar cravings, etc. It's a steroid, I believe? Anyway, I can't imagine it helping depression but maybe I'm wrong... J

Prednisone is a very dangerous drug if not taken properly. Don't take it without a Rx. And it usually messes up your brain although some say it makes them feel good. Fondly, Phillipa

There actually was a good study of dexamethasone for depression, showing that a short ride on small doses could lift depressed mood more quickly than SSRIs, and that it might be worth investigating as a method for inducing very quick response in some patients, while waiting for an antidepressant to kick in. On the other hand, the side effects could be killer.

One thing to remember about steroids is that their effects can last up to a year. That's not something I'd want to screw around with, no matter how bad things seemed.

My advice? It's a pain in the patootie to wait for a medication to work. But it's worth it, in the end, once you find something that works. Those same doctors we complain about do have one advantage over us: they know more about physiology and pharmaconetics than we do. That's why they get to have their names on the top of the page, you know?

Good luck.

Prednisone totally wipes out my depression. It's unbelieveable. I told this to my doc (this was a while ago) and they sent me to an endocrinologist who found my cortisol levels to be low. So he put me on cortisone pills. Didn't help as much as the prednisone tho.
