Pregabalin (Lyrica) as Adjunctive Therapy for Partial Seizures in Adults With Epilepsy

On June 10, the FDA approved a new indication for pregabalin (Lyrica capsules, made by Pfizer, Inc.), allowing its use as adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in epileptic adults.

The approval was based on the results of three double-blind controlled trials in 1,052 patients, showing that the addition of pregabalin to an ongoing one- to three-drug standard regimen decreased the incidence of partial seizures by up to 51% in patients with inadequately controlled epilepsy.

Adverse events included dizziness, somnolence, dry mouth, peripheral edema, blurred vision, weight gain, and difficulty with concentration and attention. According to a company news release, the discontinuation rate due to adverse effects was low.

Pregabalin was previously approved by the FDA on Dec. 30, 2004, for the management of neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and by the European Commission on July 6, 2004, for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain and as adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in adults with epilepsy.

Wow...

That's great. Lyrica has been approved for neuropathies and now (in the US) for epilepsy... and in Europe for anxiety.

Now when is Pfizer going to actually release it to the market in the US?

I talked to one of their corporate reps a couple of weeks agio and she stated that she had "no idea" and that they "still hoped" to get an FDA approval to market it for anti-anxiety also... my bet is that's what is holding up its release....

Hi Elroy!

>.....and in Europe for anxiety.......

I don't think it's approved for anxiety anywhere in Europe. In the UK at least, it's only approved for epilepsy and neuropathic pain.

Kind regards,
Ed/

Could be correct, but I was pretty sure that some one posted a review over at RemedyFind.com (from somewhere in Europe) that said that Lyrica had been approved there for anxiety.... but maybe not.

I know I'm looking forward to its release as (on top of my anxiety problems) I have some weird neuropathy type pains (which IMHO I feel are related to my elevated cortisol levels). I am currently on Neurontin. While it has helped some (maybe 30 - 40% relief?), I look forward to giving Lyrica a shot. If it also helps anxiety (as some have posted) then maybe I can drop both the Neurontin and the Xanax XR, eh?

Thanks for info.

Elroy

Hi Elroy,

Here's what Lyrica's approved for in the UK........

'peripheral neuropathic pain; adjunctive therapy for partial seizures with or without secondary generalisation'

As far as I know, Lyrica has the same licensed indications in all EU countries.

~Ed

PS. I hope Lyrica helps your pain :-)
