is SEROQUEL really good for bipolar depression??

Posted by bipolarspectrum on June 16, 2005, at 19:52:08

Hi,
One of the drugs I'm currently on for bipolar depression is zyprexa... I just read about the big seroquel study for bipolar depression.. am I on the wrong atypical?? The zyprexa doesnt do much for my depression... Could the seroquel be more helpful???

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm on Seroquel and lithium. It seemed like when I was on either one by itself, I was in pretty bad shape. But when I put them together, my mood seems to lift somewhat. It's hard to tell if my mood is better just because I'm more calm and much less agitated and flipped out, or if there is actually a direct effect on my mood.

I know both drugs supposedly have antidepressant properties so I don't really know what's responsible for my mood change.... but recently I decided to stop taking the S because I didn't think I needed it. After about 2 days I pretty much crashed back down into an agitated suicidal despair. I was basically planning my suicide. Then after I started the S again, a couple days later I felt much better. So it seems like it does have at least SOME antidepressant ability.

I'd much rather be on Seroquel than Zyprexa. I've taken Zyprexa but only on occassion if I was really flipping out. I never felt like it did anything other than knock me out. But maybe if I took it regularly it could help. Still, I like S better.

I think Seroquel might be worth a try for you.

I found that I was more clearheaded on seroquel than on zyprexa. That helped my depression.

Thanx for the posts,
I'm going to talk to my pdoc about switching from zyprexa to seroquel.. I've been on zyprexa for approx 6 weeks now.. and the only benefit is that I sleep half the day away...

Hey Link,
Does seroquel knock you out to the same degree as zyprexa? Zyprexa makes me sleep 12-13 hours...

I know this question wasn't for me, but Zyprexa knocks me out much more than Seroquel, as long as I take relatively low doses of S. I take 50 to 100mgs and it seems to be okay as far as knocked-out-ness.
