Counteracting Sexual Side Effects

Posted by Mimi on June 14, 2005, at 21:42:56

Hey all,

Haven't posted on Babble in many months. Wonder if anyone I know is still here?

In any case, I'm on 20mgs. of Lexapro, 30mgs. of Buspar & 25mg of Seroquel. Once I increased to 20 mgs. of Lexapro my sex life was gonzo. But.... I've got it back due to adding an herbal tincture called Damiana. Two dropperfuls in a bit of water 2-3 times a day. What a godsend! Forget the pdocs; they really don't know it all. Study up on your herbs, folks. My next addition will be Lavendar as an ally for mid-life anxiety, etc. Thank god for meds but they are so sedating and have so many bad side effects.

Cheers to all my old pals on this site,
Mimi

Hey Mimi!

I am so with you! My libido went into the can when I took a combo of meds that I'm not on anymore, but I added Damiana and WOW! I thought of sex non-stop, and felt like I HAD to have it!!! I even had to quit taking it to get back to a more normal state. LOL Now I just take it periodically.

Thanks for the heads up on lavendar. I take Valerian, but don't feel that it really does the trick for the anxiety. So, is the lavendar a tincture or pill? I was going to ask the doc to add something for anxiety, but will try the lavenedar first, thanks. I also take Maca every day because I have menstrual like cramps EVERY day! Bleh! Guess I should go to the gyn.

Hey Jazzy,

Thanks for the vote of solidarity! and your experience w/ Damiana; I'm still a newbie on that.

I take Buspar for my chronic anxiety. Works like a charm!

I'm getting my herbal info from "Traversing the Wild Terrain of Menopause: Herbal Allies For Midlife Women & Men by Gail Faith Edwards. (www.blessedmaineherbs.com) I have to reread the part on Lavendar to learn how to incorporate it into my life. I do plan to grow it in my garden when I get a chance to go buy a plant.

Keep me posted,
Mimi

Will have to look into that. Any side effects? Don't want anything that will make me sleepy. I have to talk to the doc about it next time, see what he says. I might just try taking the Valerian daily and see how it works, but I can't take too much, makes me sleepy.

Okay, will look into that. I have a couple of herb books around here, but have taken to using the computer instead. Keep me posted too.

Hi Jazzy,
I took Valerian years ago. It was too strong for me. I would take it at night, but then I felt sedated all the following day.

Many folks (on this site) find that Buspar is too light for them, but it may be just right for you considering your experience with Valerian.

I have zero side effects from Buspar. I take 30mg nightly and rarely 15mg during the day "if" I have to work alongside my boss!

Have a good day!
Mimi

I can definately see where this would happen. The dose on the bottle says 3 capsules, I take 1 and that's all I can take. I think tonight I'll try 2 and see what happens.

If things continue as they are, I'll have to ask the doc about what I can take/what he will give me. I"m just anxious all the time. My muscles tense up, and I'm just never comfortable in my own skin.

LOL, are you saying you don't like your boss, or they make you uncomfortable? I'm glad it works for you. Do you take an AD also?

A dopaminergic drug such as cabergoline, pramipexole, or ropinirole (there are MANY others, but those are my recommendations, cabergoline is #1 for sexual side effects) will beat the hell out of Damiana.

I am beginning a trial of Tongkat Ali myself to help out the endocrinological side of my sexual dysfunction (from an opioid, not an antidepressant).

How would I know what type of dosing to use for sexual side affects? Or these meds over the counter or prescription?

Mimi,

I forgot to ask: how long did you take the damiana before you began to notice an effect?

I think if you can take Valerian during the daytime you won't have any problems with Buspar as long as you start kind of slow. Whether it will help with your anxiety is a different matter but I wouldn't be worried about trying it, for me and many others it's pretty transparent.

Hi Jazzy,

I take Lexapro 20mg in the morning.

Planted a lavendar plant last night.

What internet sites do you use for herbal info?

Marsha,

After one week on Damiana I was able and willing to get it on....

I used to take Celexa. Lexapro is the new improved version of Celexa. It's the same med w/ one element--a sedating one--removed.

Hi Mimi,

I need the sedating element of Celexa, I guess for anxiety. However I need to not have the sedating element of Celexa because I'm tired and lethargic. It's quite annoying that most of the things that treat depression can cause anxiety and most of the things that treat anxiety can cause depression (at least for my chemistry).

I agree with you totally about the pdocs. Amd they have such a tendency to minimize side effects. It's easy for them to tolerate insomnia and dry mouth and anorgasmia and apathy.....in their patients.

Marsha,

Lexapro, Buspar & Seroquel(25mg @ nite for anxiety) works for me! Everyone has to find their own right combo. I hate how it took me years and years and years to come to this--and it's still not perfect. (Seroquel is too sedating in it's hangover effect.)

on the run,
Mimi

There are so many meds that there are infinite possible combinations. So it could take your entire life to find the one perfect combo for your specific situation. It's a crapshoot.
