HELP please . . . Ambien available in Canada?!?!?

Posted by TamaraJ on June 17, 2005, at 11:15:26

I am getting conflicting information. One pharmacy says that Ambien is available in Canada, under the name of zolpidem. Today, another pharmacy has said that it is not available in Canada. Is it or isn't it? Please can anybody confirm the status of Ambien's (zolpidem's) availability in Canada?

And, if Ambien is not available in Canada, what would others suggest as a sleep aid that would work as well as Ambien, and in a similar fashion.

Thanks so much.

Tamara

Hi T!

I don't think zolpidem's available in Canada but I was under the impression that Maxime (Quebec) had tried it. How confusing.

Zopiclone (Imovane) - a similar drug, is available in Canada. It's very similar to Lunesta eg. the bad taste etc.

Zaleplon is also available in Canada. The Canadian brand name is Starnoc. The US brand name is Sonata.

Thanks Ed!

Perhaps Maxime had tried it when she was living in the States at one point.

With respect to the Zaleplon, do you think it would be as effective as Ambien? Is its pharmacology similar? I guess it might be hard to answer if you haven't tried it, but I thought I'd take a chance.

Love

Not only weird, but annoying. Grrrrrrr!!! Sometimes I think in Canada, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing :-)

Hi T!

>With respect to the Zaleplon, do you think it would be as effective as Ambien?

Zaleplon can be useful for 'putting' you to sleep but it probably won't keep you asleep for very long (if waking up in the night is a problem). I've always had the impression that zaleplon was somewhat less effective than Ambien, I don't know how much truth there is in that.

>Is its pharmacology similar?

It's action at GABA receptors is very similar to Ambien. Zaleplon has an extremely short half life though - shorter than Ambien. If waking up during the night is a problem, zopiclone (Imovane) might be more useful. Hopefully you'd be lucky and not get the yucky taste!

Love,
Ed xx

hello there, chemist here...not wanting to jump into ed's territory...it appears to me that Ambien is approved for sale in Canada but the company - now, Sanofi-Aventis - has chosen not to do so for financial reasons. in any event, some testimonial dictation - dated, and as dazzling as the u.s. equivalent - via Health Canada's site can be read at:

http://www.parl.gc.ca/committee/CommitteePublication.aspx?SourceId=65980

which, should your current sleeping medication and/or access to CSPAN/CSPAN2 in the u.s. fail to put you to sleep, certainly be of aid to you...all the best, chemist

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups not about medication to Psycho-Babble Social. Here's a link:

Hi Tamara. It was once available in Canada in the 1990's. I tried it while in the hospital and then for a while afterwards. Then it was pulled from the shelves. I don't know why though. It was called Starnoc.

Then I guess it was Sonata I tried. I always thought it had been Ambien. Sorry for the confusion.
