Parnate Problems

Posted by Maxime on June 7, 2005, at 14:17:57

DAMN! I don't understand. My beloved Parnate is not treating me well. I am having a hard time tolerating 80 mg. I sweat like crazy and I get a headache. Yet at 60 mg I am still depressed. I will try 70 mg and see what happens.

Why is it doing to this to me? I haven't changed anything in my diet. No new meds. Nothing. I used to be able to take 100 mg!!!!

Why do meds backfire like this! Antidepressants of things? Like we don't have enough to deal with.

I am sure my BP is high right now (not in danger) what with headache and the extreme sweating that is going on. Mind you it's 30 degrees Celcius right now.

I really think it's a cruel joke for antidepressants to do this. It's like the way the old antipsychotics used to make people drool! Like someone with mental illness doesn't have enough stigma to deal with!

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Maybe I will try Prozac again. Of course I bet that one will go against me as well.

HELP?

Maxime

Thats exactly the reason I dont take anti-depressants...I find them more trouble than they are worth.

If a medication (anti-depressant) is causing more problems than good, its best to steer clear of them.

Why not try just working with mood stabilisers? Even ones like Trileptal, although they don't have antidepressant properties..indirectly I think they do for Bipolar people, but not unipolar.

If Trileptal does its job of not putting you high...then you have no way of crashing down, as what goes "up" must come "down"..in the long run this stops you from getting depressed..as if you use anti-depressants its constantly working against the mood stabilser and causing these aggravating symtoms?

I'm sure there is a way for you to get some relief...I hope you feel better soon Maxine

Hi Maxi,

>I get a headache......

Do you have a BP monitor??

>Why is it doing to this to me? I haven't changed anything in my diet.

Tyramine content of certain foods is VERY variable eg. one batch of cheese might be very low in tyramine and the next batch might be very high in tyramine. Perhaps you ate something which had more tyramine than would be expected.

It might be useful to get a pill to take for hypertension. You could ask your doc about nifedipine. Unlike Thorazine, it won't make you lactate :-) You'd need to get a BP monitor though- if you don't have one already.

Love,
Ed xxxx

Hi sweet Nick.

I do take trileptal. I have VERY bad depression. I have attempted suicide several times. I need an anti-depressant.

Back in February and March I wasn't able to take any Parnate because it was reacting with an asthma med (but I didn't know that at the time). I was so low I could barely function. I had a suicide plan in place. It was very bad.

I might go back to the only other med that has worked for me - Prozac.

Thanks for your suggestions though. You are always eager to try and help people and you are very empathetic. :-) Hey are you single? ;-)

Hugs,
Maxime

Oh. Well maybe we have found the problem. I am not eating much. :-) I am consuming about 200-300 calories a day. I guess that could be why. I know, I know, it's hard to understand anorexia and the hold it has on people, but it's hell. And I know I am starving my brain. I know all the damage I am doing ... I don't expect anyone who hasn't been there to understand.

I'm very sorry.

Hey Maxine :-)

I see, it looks like you definately need some kind of anti-depressant on board then.

If prozac works then at least that offers some hope for the future...I know this may be regarded as alternative so Bob may redirect...but, how omega 3's, st johns wort or even ginseng?...they could always add some boost to the medications you're taking and in general are side effect free...I remember reading that ginseng is a weak MAOI...every little helps..added boost of libido too ; )

You're most welcome for my suggestions :-) I hate to see the pain people go through on here and feel with any offers of advice or any of the little knowledge I have, I hope I can be of some help...Thank you ever so much for the praise, its very much appreciated...lol & yes i'm single ;-)

Don't feel sorry for expressing you're problems as Ed said its an illness, not your fault - problems are there to be sovled!

Warm regards

Nick

No the effects I am feeling are from the Parnate. It's a different kind of headache than one would get from hunger. Beside I don't hunger cues anymore.

Hi Maxime,
You know, this could be a sign of your thyroid being out of whack. When I get hyperthyroid (when I am on too much thyroid meds), I start to sweat profusely with heat and the slightest exertion. I also get a headache in the forehead area.

Can you get your TSH checked?

gg

Hi GG -

It was okay just 2 months ago. But I am seeing another endo on the 15th so I am sure she will test it.

But Parnate is known for making you sweat and the feel the heat more. And I remember this headache from when I tried to take over 100 mg of Parnate. I was still trying to find the right dosage then.

But you could be right and I will know another week or so. Maybe I have gone hyperthyroid as well. Who knows?

I'm a mess.

Maxime

I couldn't take the headache etc. any longer and had to take some thorazine. Damn. My system needs to be clean of that stuff for 4 months to have my prolactin levels checked.

Loser. Would someone please just take me out into a field and shoot me.

Hi.
The thorazine calmed everything down in 15 minutes and I only took about 12 mg. The headache, the pounding heart ... all gone. And then an hour later I had to go bed because I was so tired from it.

It was my encrinologist who told me that about the prolactin levels and the blood test.

A walk in the English countryside sounds nice ...
