Stimulants Depression... past or present

Posted by Mr.Scott on May 29, 2005, at 21:25:42

Hi,

I'd like to start a discussion on stimulants.

Can you share your experience using stimulants particularly ritalin and amphetamine in the treatment of depression or really in the treatment of anything for that matter.

Dose, effect, length of time, efficacy...

Here's my 2cents worth..

I currently use Adderall XR 40mg daily (tried up to 60 but found side effects limiting) to augment a touch of Zoloft 25mg. I also use .75mg of clonazepam daily (hate it!) and periodically use outpatient right unilateral ECT if things get downright awful. I've taken the adderall for about 5 months and have developed tolerance to some of its effects, but not all.

Hi Scott,

I take 20 - 40 mg a day of ritalin. From what I am reading that seems like a very low dose. I take it for ADHD. I dont have any side effects that I am aware of and I dont even feel like I take it anymore...I guess because I am having problems focussing again....possibly a sign I need more I guess. It was very helpful initially but now Im not so sure what its doing.

Last year, I was on 40 mg Lexapro for anxiety and depression, and 120 mg Strattera (60 mg 2x). That worked very well but made me tired.

Then I replaced both with Cymbalta. This also worked very well for anxiety and depression and made me less tired. But I started losing my temper which I had not done before.

After an unreasonable temper outburst 3 months ago, I stopped Cymbalta and replaced with 72 mg Concerta in the morning, 100 mg Toprol XL, and 5 mg Lexapro before bed. I also added 2 mg Lunesta before bed.

I have had life long pain in my chest (or heart) due to agitation. The pain was 24/7. The Toprol go rid of it for the first time ever. The Concerta also makes me feel a lot more calm, and definitely more focused. I am starting my 4th month on these 2 drugs.

I had originally started on 50 mg Toprol, but raised it to 100 mg to conteract the agitation that returned at night when the Concerta wore off.

Depression definately appears when stimulants wear off, but thank God only lasts a few days.

Coffee, Nicotine, Codeine helps.

Maybe even reasess if i need the Ritalin, Yer i think i do-its nice to have
-peps me up
-slows me down
-feeds my brain
-feeds my psych

Cheers

Hi Aloha,

Concerta is available here but costs $280 for 30! 54mg pills, Maybe if I had the cash It could be a go.

Ritalin IR 10 and SR 20 (Crap) are $3 for any amount 100 200 300 pills so the choice is clear.

Wellbutrin has similar effects to Ritalin?
it is available here but only indicated for stop-smoking purposes, which i (could) qualify for, and you have to pay for it yourself around $100 month.

I have started SAMe 600mgs day so we'll see

Which country ar eyou in?
Is there any way to get free Concerta from the manufacturer
or samples?

Metadate CD is longer acting than Ritalin but it isn't as smooth as Concerta.

Wellbutrin has been described as "an attypical antidepressant with stimulating effects and effects on ADHD symptoms" It doesn't have
any of the addicting properties of teh srtimulants and indeed you would probably die if you took three tablets. It produces seizures in fairly low doses (400mg and above)
