Trileptal Salt Tablets...Ed or anyone?

Posted by Nickengland on May 27, 2005, at 15:35:07

Hello,

I've been taking Trileptal at a low dose 300mg, and this has been great for my mood. However I started to get discomfort around the sides of my body (kidneys?) This pain could vary daily to being a mild discomfort to a moderate pain/discomfort.

Went and told my GP: first GP said it wasn't the tablets, was a coincidence and most probably was a muscle strain and even refused to give me a blood test (I walked out gritting my teeth with anger as I knew it was the tablets)

So the next 2 days I didn't take the tablets..and what do you know?..no pain/discomfort -then restarted the tablets and pain discomfort.

Now back I went to the GP (this time a different GP!) and expained the pain and that id discontinued the tablets, restarted them etc so that I could pin-point the tablets were the cause.

He was very helpful, said that these pains would not generally be a symtom of Hyponatremia, but we're get a blood test to make sure. Had the blood test (to complicate things even more on the particular day of the blood test the pain was bearly noticeable lol) The results of the test came back - "normal no further action"

Now also I noticed that on the blood test form that I got, under "clinical details" he had written,"Loin Pain"...which I guess covers the symtoms i've been experiencing - anyone had or heard of this before?

Getting back to my original question! lol...Today was a very hot weather for the uk so I was sweating far more than usual, I also did some much needed excersise which I havent done in ages and sweated big-time..Also must have lost alot of sodium (salt) in my sweat??...and now the loin pain/kidney/sides of lower abdominal area is feeling very un-comfortable indeed........Is this because I've lowered the sodium level through all my sweating??...and would taking Salt Tablets *possibly* help get rid of this damn pain!!!

If not I'm going to have to quit Trileptal as I cannot stand this constant discomfort : (

Oh man 31 degrees down here in essex today lol.

What kind/brands of salt tablets are there Ed?...any I can get over the counter? Also can they be harmful?

I think I may just have to chuck this stuff away..at least ive got the Tegretol to full back on.

Kind regards

Hi Nick!

I'm not sure if there's any OTC. You can get sodium chloride tablets on prescription. You could try it for a few days and see if it helps. High salt in the diet is associated with high blood pressure.

Kind regards,
Ed.

Thanks Ed :-) (nm)

You're still having that pain? Flank pain is just a medical term to explain where the pain is. Fondly, Phillipa

Did you know that Trileptal reduced the amount of sodium in your body? So if you are feeling the effects it could be very dangerous. Sodium is an electrolyte and if it get too low you can have heart problems.

In fact, I would get your levels checked as soon as possible.

Yep still having the pain : (

I'm skipping the tablets for a couple of days and taking Tegretol now, think it may just be best that i stop Trileptal...such a catch 22 as its the best for I've had out of all of them : (

Yes I know all about the sodium thing and have had the levels checked a couple of weeks ago..that why I was asking about the salt (sodium) tablets.

There seems I either have 2 choices, put with the pain or discontinue the Trileptal. I really dont want to have to discontinue as it really is the best med for my mood. I've stopped it for now and the next couple of days and will take Tegretol (which I hate)

I may try 100mg of tegretol and 150mg of trileptal when the pain has eased up..maybe that'll work?! lol
