Anxiety...which med works!

Posted by mellybelly on May 19, 2005, at 11:16:57

I have anxiety problems and I have for a while now. At first I was put on xanax 50mg and only took it when I needed it. The medicine worked very well and I really liked it but my doctor then suggested I take an SSRI because xanax can have many risks. Took lexapro and felt so sick I stopped and now I am on Zoloft 50mg. However I have no sex drive, feel tired all the time and cannot concentrate. My anxiety is still present at times. I don't like these side effects and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a medication for anxiety that works well without annoying side effects? Should I just taper off zoloft and go back on xanax?

For me - only Ultram (tramadol) works for anxiety.

I take Zoloft and it works well, but no sex drive either. I am going to talk to the doc about that the next visit. Some doctors add in Wellbutrin, and that takes care of the lack of no sex drive. I don't think they can be combined as well as others. I know it can be combined with Lexapro. -L

Ultram + SSRI??

Can Ultram (let's say 50mg) be combined safely with an SSRI (let's say Prozac 50mg)? I seem to remember an issue concerning seizure risk and/or serotonin syndrome - I believe they're both metabolized via 2D6..

Thanks

Jim

Um, Did you mean .5 of xanax or 5mg of xanax. I don't think you can take 50mg of xanax. Fondly, Phillipa

Oh Goodness! I meant .5 of xanax...goodness if I took 50mg I would be living life in the clouds!

Was .5mg of xanax working for your anxiety? If it was I'd go back on it. That is a very low dose. And if your anxiety is alleviated by .5mg you won't take more. You may even be able to cut back if you are feeling in control and without anxiety. Fondly, Phillipa

Hated the quick in and out of xanax, mood havoc.

Funny coming from you phillipa, with your mentioned fondness for Valium, I thought you may have mentioned a switch to our beloved Valium-down to 20mgs (still decreasing, ugg) daily from 40.

Hope you are well, love your posts:)

fondly Paul

Paulwell, I do like valium. But there was a time that xanax worked very well for me. I even got down to .l25mg and felt fine. My problems started when my thyroid became hypo. Still struggling with the sleep and clingy issue. Afraid of people. Feel like I'm floating at times. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi there
Out of interest, is Ultram a prescription med in Poland?

Hi Phillipa
Thats the problem isn't it? It calms you down but it is sort of disorienting as well. Better for sleeping, say, than going to a party.
