My daughter took Lexapro a couple of years ago, and I think she may have gotten up to around 40mg. She was depressed, and had a bit of a binge eating problem, and her doctor said that it takes a higher dosage of Lexapro to work for those two problems together. Your doctor should know what is best for you, and I wouldn't worry about going higher at this point. She did quit taking it, and started Wellbutrin because at a higher dosage, it did cause her to start to gain weight. (She was binge eating, so that may have been it also?) Don't panic!!!! Please. Lexapro is suppose to be weight neutral. I do know that she felt MUCH better when the doctor did increase her dosage. Good luck.-L

I don't know what the highest dose is, but I would guess that some people probably go as high as 120 mg or so before switching to a different drug. I did very well on 40 mg. I know that my doctor has patients on 60 or more.

I am currently on 30mg of Lexapro and when I asked my pdoc for an increase which I read online that 40mg is typically the highest recommeded max dose, my pdoc refused indicating that I was at the highest dose. Instead he added Wellbutrin SR which did lift my depression after 2 weeks. Lexapro alone pooped out on me after 7 months, but with the addition of Wellbutrin, my depression has lifted once again.

I do remember the doctor telling us that adding Wellbutrin was an option, at the time she was taking Lexapro. He said it was a really good combination. -L

It's true, I know that first hand. I took Wellbutrin and my anxiety was intollerable. I was almost manic with it, and had to go off the medication. That's when I started taking Zoloft. It works for some people. My daughter has anxiety, but Wellbutrin doesn't seem to bother her, or at least she hasn't told me that it is. Have you thought about a mood stabilizer? I take Topamax, and it works wonders for my depression and anxiety, because it keeps me on a nice level mode. -L

Wellbutrin is a great drug for a lot of people. Then are are some like me who get a bit too jittery on it.
