ARICEPT

Posted by scatterbrained on April 4, 2005, at 2:33:30

Hi, I take aricept along w/ a bunch of other meds for depression and just recently increased dosage to 10mg from 5mg and have actually noticed a difference w/ increased ability to think more clearly. I was just wondering if anybody has gone above the 10mg dose.I believe 10mg is the max FDA approved dose, but that's for geriatric patients, and although I feel like one, I am 22.Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

yes it's listed as one but it is increasingly being used off lable for other conditions such as depression induced cognitive impairment and for remediating neurocognitive side affects caused by some of the other psychotropics for example, it helps with SSRI induced word finding problems. It's also been proven moderatley affective in treating TD,improving verbal memory and fluency in schizophrenia(while maintaing a calming affect, not making the psychosis worse like many stimulants and antidepressants have been known to do), helping with psychotic behavior in the elderly, and is being tested as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder, (imagine a mood stabilizer which actually ENHANCES cognition instead of blunting it!)

I found it helpful for mood and cognition. But it raised my liver enzymes and I had to stop it.

Thats a shame, have you found anything else to help you with mood and cognition?

Memantine seems to be helping depresssion. I still don't have the cognition where I want it, though it's better than when I was on Lexapro.

Yeah, I'm on mementine too, along with zoloft, adderall, SAM-E, and zyprexa.I've found the adderall, zyprexa and aricept more helpful for mental clearity than the mementine. Strangely I've experienced some cognitive problems with the mementine. The drug seems to help me more with anhedonia than with anything else.

That's quite an interesting brew. I agree about the memantine. The improvement in depression is great, but I felt as though I were getting stupider at 10 mg. It's better at 5 mg, but I'm not sure there isn't still some fuzziness from it. I've tried focalin, but at the moment I'm so revved and anxious that a stimulant is not an option.
