Suggestions for motivation?

Posted by The_Resistance on April 3, 2005, at 8:51:23

I'm currently taking 225mgs of Effexor XL

This seems to help my depression but not my motivation, I just seem to procrastinate a lot, can't seem to focus on tasks that need my attention.

Are there any meds that help motivation other than classic stimulent?
I tried Provigil but it didn't work, neither did Moclobemide

I hesitate to mention this, as some people have (valid) reservations about using atypical antipsychotics for anything other than schizophrenia or mania... but I have felt my motivation improved with use of small doses of both Geodon and Abliify. Still procrastinate, but less so...
These medications have helped me with anxiety, depression and motivation. At times I wonder whether I even need the other medications I am on, as the dramatic change comes for me three days after starting an atypical antipsychotic.

For a very brief perod I did also have success with amineptine, but it did not last and it made me fatigued.

I am having pretty good results with a low dose of Wellbutrin XL. I take 150mg in the a.m.

Welbutrin will likely give you the "umph" you are looking for but if you are prone to anxiety, beware.

When I was on it, I did not sleep nor eat for 4 days. I paced the floor for hours and could not calm down.. BUT hey, that was motivation!

I think anyone who is prone to anxiety should not take Wellbutrin as a first-line med, but may use it to augment once you're fairly stable on something else. For instance, you're AD is working well, but you're having serious motivation or weight-gaining issues. I had anxiety last year and would NOT have wanted to start out on Wellbutrin, but it has been OK for me once I got stabilized on my MS/AD.

Thanks to everyone who posted a response

I've always been reluctant to try Wellbutrin because I am prone to anxiety, but perhaps a low dose might be an idea.

Abilify is an interesting suggestion, I'd like to try it, but finding a doctor to prescribe it is the challenge.

Funny you should mention it, but Banga it is strange that Amblify is doing so much for your problems. I wonder what the literature says about ambilify and anxiety, motivation, etc. Fondly, Phillipa

LOL Ed.. I guess you are right. ha! (nm)
