Should I worry about seizure?

Posted by TrishP on March 22, 2005, at 7:09:50

If I am taking 600mg of Trileptal and 150mg. Wellbutrin XL a day, should I worry about the possibility of having a seizure?

My Pdoc says that if I've never had a seizure don't worry.

What do you think?

hey! Wellbutrin is, of course, the official anti-depressant for drug-induced seizures. That said, the rate is pretty low--4 in 1,000 treated patients, I think--and your dose is pretty low, too (you can go up to 450mgs/day, to put that in perspective). Theoretically, the Trileptal would help to lower your risks even further. (With Clozapine, an atypical anti-psychotic with a very HIGH drug-induced seizure rate, Depakote is sometimes used for seizure-prevention). Assuming you do not now have and have never had an eating disorder and are not currently withdrawing from treatment with benzos or other sedatives, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Then again...if it REALLY bothers you, it is your body and your treatment, so ask your doctor to switch you to something else.

It sounds like a safe cocktail to me. The XL version is a very smooth releaser of the drug and I believe the hazards of seizure with WB were primarily associated with the immediate release formulations and doses *above* 300mg/day, and you are taking half that. The question my pdoc asked me had to do with eating disorders and alcohol use (the two risk factors which were stat. higher for seizure incidence). If you don't have an eating disorder and you keep your alcohol in moderation there shouldn't be any trouble. BTW, the alcohol thing has to do with *withdrawal* from the alcohol (i.e.-next day hangover from several drinks), which in itself reduces the seizure threshold quite a bit.

I actually had seizures as a child and I did fine on at least double the dose of Wellbutrin you are taking.

I wouldn't worry too much.
