serotonin and poor digestion?

Posted by jessers11581 on March 13, 2005, at 11:25:29

Does anyone know whether low serotoin can cause digestive problems? I notice that after I eat any kind of sugar or other carbohydrate (which I CRAVE every moment of the day), I get terrible, painful bloating and gas. It happens with other foods, too, but I mainly notice it after things like cereal, muffins, peanut butter on crackers, etc. I take Celexa 50 mgs. dailiy. Any input?

I would imagine 50mg a day could very easily cause gastrointestinal irritation for some people. Isn't it true that a good portion of the body's serotonin receptors are in the gut? I bet your suspicions are right

I've noticed a lot of gas with chocolate. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi. I do remember reading that 95% of the serotonin receptors are in the gut. The medicine that gave me the WORSE gas and indigestion was Ludiomil, but that doesn't have a very significant effect on serotonin. Ludiomil blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and also has some significant effects on histamine, I believe.

Any chance you have a food allergy and that the medication isn't involved?

Try taking that out of your diet for a few days to check it out. No harm right? Except it may drive you crazy. No wheat means no pasta, bread, cereals, basically anything made with wheat flour. Got a hunch about this one. good luck. Vicwa
