NEW Nardil work?

Posted by clay on March 7, 2005, at 18:19:33

Have been on Nardil for almost 20yrs. Started taking Nardil for severe panic attacks and agoraphobia that hit me at age 25.
It aided me in going from a complete "home bound" agoraphobic to being able to live a pretty normal life, build multiple successful businesses, have a family etc.
Even though I noticed the change in pill outer shell last year, I never gave it any thought.

Noticed last month on this site about all the controversy as new Nardil being ineffective for a few.

WhatI have found to this point is that it may take a slight increase in dosage to be as effective. At this point, am not complety sure as to whether it is for real or placebo that it may be not quite as effective.

PS Normal dose for me is alternating 45mg and 60mg each day. Never had more than 60mg on a dailey basis. For the past few weeks, have upped to 60mg and appears to possibly be working as normal.

Hi Clay,

It's good to know that not everyone has trouble with the new Nardil. Are you taking the Pfizer version that's available in the U.S.? It's also nice to hear that it has worked for you for so long. I hardly ever hear about Nardil pooping-out (though I often see posts about Parnate doing so).

Do you mind if I ask whether you've gained much weight on the drug? Do you have many side effects from it? Have you had any problems with the diet? I've been considering an MAOI for a while now but have been too afraid to actually start on one.

Thanks,
Kara

It's good to hear a success story from an AD, especially an old one like Nardil. You must have a very old pdoc, or one who listens to you. How have you avoided them trying to switch you to a newer drug? Congratulations, Fondly, Phillipa

YOU ASK "gained much weight on the Nardil?
NO. (ABOUT 10LBS IN THE PAST 20 YRS). I DO NOTICE THAT I HAVE A CRAVING FOR SWEETS THAT WAS NOT AS STRONG AS BEFORE TAKING IT. I AM VERY HEALTH CONSCIOUS AS I OWN A CHAIN OF HEALTH CLUBS AND WORKING OUT IS A MAJOR PART OF MY LIFESTYLE

YOU ASK " Do you have many side effects from it?"
LUCKILY, NO. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY SIDE EFFECTS THAT I AM AWARE OF EXCEPT, ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO, I HAD TAKEN ABOUT A YEAR TO TAPER DOWN TO 30mg/DAY FROM 45mg. AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS ON 30mgs, PANIC ATTACKS HIT ME HARD AND CRIPPLED MY ACTIVITIES FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS IN WHICH TIME I HAD KICKED UP MY DOSE TO 6Omgs, WHICH BROUGHT ME SLOWLY BACK TO NORMAL. DURING THE FIRST MONTH OF 60mg/DAY, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, I NOTICED MY SEXUAL ABILITY WAS SLOWED. AFTER ABOUT A MONTH ON 60mg THE SIDE EFFECTS DISAPPEARED.
THE FEW TIMES I HAVE GONE ON CONTINUOUS 60mg/day, IT HAS ONLY BEEN FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND AS SOON AS I START FEELING NORMAL, I DECREASE TO ALTERNATING 45mg and 60mg PER DAY AS SOON AS I FEEL I CAN. I TRAY TO TAKE THE LEAST THAT ALLOWS ME TO BE NORMAL.

YOU ASK "Have you had any problems with the diet?" NEVER THAT I HAVE BEEN AWARE OF. I DO NOT EAT ANY CHEESE EXCEPT COTTAGE CHEESE AND CREAM CHEESE. RARELY DRINK ALCOHOL EXCEPT SOME WHITE WINE. BESIDES OVER THE COUNTER ANTIHISTAMINES ETC. THAT IS ABOUT MY DIET RESTRICTION.

YOU STATE "I've been considering an MAOI for a while now but have been too afraid to actually start on one." WHEN THIS HIT ME 20 YRS AGO AT AGE 25, I BECAME SO DISABLED AND ALMOST HOME BOUND WITH FEAR. TRIED SEVERAL OTHER AD'S, THEN NARDIL. HAVE BEEN ON IT CONTINUOUSLY FOR 20 YEARS. IT MAY NOT BE FOR EVERYONE, BUT I FEEL THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT SUFFER FOREVER BECAUSE THEY ARE NEVER ALLOWED TO TRY IT.

SWITCHING HAS NEVER BEEN CONSIDERED. THE ORIGINAL DR THAT STARTED ME ON IT 20 YRS AGO RETIRED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. THE NEW DR JUST PICKED UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF, WHICH IS I GO IN ONCE PER 6 MONTHS TO GET A REFILL PRESCRIPTION. IF A NEW DR TRIED TO GET ME TO SWITCH, I WOULD FIND A NEW DR.
I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO FIND AN AD THAT WORKS. "DONT MESS WITH WHAT ISN'T BROKEN."

(AS I STATED IN AN EARLIER POST, I AM WATCHING TO SEE IF THE NEW NARDIL HAS LOST SOME OF ITS ZAP.)
