is zoloft less or more stimulating than luvox?

Posted by greg diamond on February 27, 2005, at 20:27:08

hello - this could probably be answered by phillipa, who seems to have a lot of helpful knowledge of various p meds. i am back on zoloft (after a year and a half break) and am finding it rather stimulating, even more so than the first time i tried it. the remeron i take at bedtime kills the 'buzz', but only until the morning when i take the zoloft. then i am 'up' for the better part of the day, which is none too good for my general anxiety. what do you think? i tried paxil, and didn't notice much of a difference. effexor was way too stimulating, as was wellbutrin. celexa kills my libido dead, zoloft leaves it stunted. luvox maybe? or, there is always nothing....but then the tide goes out and i become a mess again.
cheers craig

From what Ive read Luvox is a more sedating med...when I was on Zoloft it was very activating, and I had restless legs syndrome.
But Ive only just started Luvox, so I cannot give you a full comparison.

How long have you been on the zoloft? I am back on it after several years, and at first I also found it stimulating. That effect has deminished and I am fine after one month of going of opposite direction and feeing tired. -L

What follows was orignally posted elsewhere, where people were concerned with fatigue. Read the chart bottom up to go from "least activating" to "most activating" (more or less).

--------------

I pulled together the info on somnolence from the prescribing information for different drugs. My experience hasn't exactly followed the statistics, but it's not too far off. I combined the data for depression and anxiety trials, where available (ie for Lexapro, somnolence was 6% for depression, 12% for anxiety, for an average of 9%). The first number is % of somnolence and the second, in brackets, is abnormal ejaculation, also a major problem with these drugs.

Ranked from least to most sedating:

Wellbutrin 2% [none?]
Cymbalta 7% [3%]
Lexapro 9% [12%]
Prozac 12% [no good data]
Zoloft 13% [14%]
Effexor XR 15.5% [14%]
Luvox 23% [8%]
Paxil CR 23% [13%]

I have taken both Zoloft and Luvox---and from my experience, Zoloft was alot more stimulating than Luvox which is more sedating.

That's probably true. For when I took both zoloft, and luvox for the first time, I could tolerate the luvox at high doses. When I first tried zoloft, I quit after a few days as I felt awful. I didn't give it a chance though because I was ill with a virul infection when I tried the zoloft. I'm hoping to try the luvox again. See pdoc tomorrow. Thanks for the compliment, but Ed, Scott, Link, etc know an awful lot more than I do about the intricate workings of the meds. I can only speak from my experience. Fondly, Phillipa

Luvox is definitely more laid back than Zoloft. Zoloft for me was activatiing, caused anxiety but also made me sleepy, weird.

Luvox is pretty smooth.

well, i am back on it after a year break. i take remeron too, so that sedates me until mid morning. the dosage is low now (25, and then up to 50). i have gone as high as 100 before, but the deadened libido became an issue. i am single now, so apart from interfering with 'self-love' its not an issue! i wanna be sedated, as the ramones say. my anxiety is killer right now, as i am ending a grad program and my head swims daily with assignments. i see the doc in a month after this trial.
thanks all, craig

Just a note that the med might take up to 2-3 months to get *full* effect. I know Luvox has effects on melatonin levels, which is why it is likely more sedating. (It increases bodily melatonin levels.) But, if you can't tolerate the drug at all, it's best to either start really low and maybe work up, or move on to another one.

Good luck..
Jay
