Remeron and weight gain

Posted by Bez on February 23, 2005, at 5:07:05

Hi everyone
Please can anyone help me, has anyone had success not gaining weight with this med. I was on this med a couple of years ago and gained a lot of weight so my Dr. tried a combination of Remeron and Wellbutrin what a nightmare, it caused me to have a full blown seizure resulting in me losing my job and driving license, so anyone considering this please be careful. Anyway stopped the meds. Have recently been restarted on the Remeron coz it is the only thing that will help me sleep but am so scared of gaining the weight again. Any advice would be really appreciated
Thanks Bez

hey! Do you think your doc is understanding enough to medicate to prevent weight gain? When I went on a tricyclic antidepressant (Tofranil), my doc also upped my Adderall. Reason 1) was to provide more stimulation and "beef up" the tofranil; 2) was to counteract the very real possibility of considerable weight gain. I gained a little weight, but not that much. Anyway, I've read that some shrinks are starting to proactively medicate against weight-loss...the father of one of my friends, for instance, sometimes prescribes phentermine or tenuate with TCAs.

Hi Phillipa. That's good that you haven't gained weight. How long have you been on it? Are you on any other medications? I've heard that if it weren't for the weight gain, Remeron would be considered one of the best AD's in terms of really helping the depression.

I've been on remeron for lmonth. I'm also on 25mg of zoloft in am. I'm going to go up to 50mg tomorrow am. I also take 5mg of valium 2xday, and chloral hydrate at bedtime with the valium and remeron. Since my pdoc is new, I don't know what her plans are for uping the meds or even possibly changing them or adding to them. I see her on Monday. Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks Phillippa. (nm) » Phillipa

Dear Sarah T, I have tried just about every AD going and I do think Remeron is the best especially if you have problems with sleep. It's just the weight gain thing. Good Luck Bez

I have been taking 40mg a day of adderall and that seems to help keep the munchies down as well as keep me from becoming too sluggish. good luck!

a little funny follow up...when my doc perscribed me the remeron, she told me i would have to diet and excercise or i would gain weight on this stuff. i already put on 30 pounds in the 2 years that i have been unemployed and depressed so i was pretty irked at the idea of a new drug that would make me fat. she insisted that "90 minutes a day of exercise is all you have to do and you won't gain weight." What?! i told her when i'm depressed exercise is the last thing i do...anyway. thought it would be good for a chuckle. take care.

Hi Bez,
I'm really sorry to hear about all you've been through. I've never had a seizure but I sure was worried that I would have one when I was on Wellbutrin and other medicines that were known for their lower seizure thresholds. Does Remeron have a low seizure threshold? Are you on Remeron and Adderall now? How's that going?

Hi Sarah T
I am just on the Remeron and have no problems in regard to seizures and in the past I was on this medication for about 3 years. I am at the moment searching the net to try and find where I can purchase Adderall from, so hopefully that will help with the eating. I have only been back on the Remeron for 1 week and am already gaining weight even though i try and exercise as much as poss. Take care. Bez

I forgot how much are you taking? Low doses aren't supposed to cause wt. gain. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Bez. Oh, I guess it was "hffcookie" who is combining Remeron and Adderall. Is Adderall not available where you live? I'd be VERY careful about purchasing it online. You never know what you might be getting, and you don't know about the quality of the medicine or the place you order it from. Can't your doctor help you try to find a way to obtain it from a reputable place? I'd also be concerned about giving my credit card number out to some of those Internet pharmacies. I wonder whether you might be able to find an open-minded doctor who is willing to help you obtain Adderall from a safe place rather than risking your health and your wallet at an Internet pharmacy?

Do you think that the weight gained on Remeron is true weight gain or do you think it's partly water retention?
