paxil cr and paroxetine.

Posted by krybrahaha78 on February 21, 2005, at 22:33:45

Im on Paxil CR 37.5 mgs and it doesnt seem to help a whole lot with my anxiety-seems to make it worse. Ive taken regular paxil before but had to quit taken it because of nausea, however, it seemed it was somewhat working at 20 mgs. My question is that does anyone think that regular paroxetine is any better than cr version. Im thinking about switching to generic.

This is a very good question. I know the diff is supposed to be that the CRs are controlled release, but really is the point any more than them just having control over a patent??

I've taken regular Paxil before but had to quit taken it because of nausea, however, it seemed it was somewhat working at 20 mgs. My question is that does anyone think that regular paroxetine is any better than cr version. Im thinking about switching to generic.

I was on 20mg regular Paxil for 6 months when the CR came out and my doctor automatically switched me over to 25mg CR version. Two days after switching I actually had a mild withdrawal, so I would say the immediate release is better. Even after I adjusted to the CR, it didn't seem as effective.

The CR version also gave me diarrhea, while the immediate made me a little constipated! The Geomtrix coating on the CR is packed full of lactose, which I found out after looking at the inactive ingredients. This coating simply lets the pill bypass your stomach and activate in your lower bowels, which also explains the diarrhea SE. In my opinion, I don't think you get the full effect with the CR.

If you look at the PI for both, the half life for regular Paxil is actually longer than the CR!

When I originally started paxil at l0mg I had diarrhea. I asked my old pdoc about the timed release, and he did not recommend it. Unfortunately I didn't ask why. Fondly, Phillipa
