serious constipation and bloating - of what ?

Posted by ben on January 17, 2005, at 13:17:46

I am taking Effexor 225 mg/d, Neurontin 600 mg twice daily and Lithium (ca. 0.8 mmol/l = blood level) for more than 2 years. About a year ago I started to have constipation and a lot of gaz. After trying drinking enough water, eating enough fiber without any success I went to a doctor who made a colonoscopy. Nothing serious came out, but he diagnosed a heavy constipation. Then we tried several laxatives and combinations of those without any success. Zelmac was the next step but nothing happend. The focus was on my meds and he suggested to reduce my regimen. So I went down with the Effexor (from 300 mg/d) and the Neurontin (from 800 mg twice daily) but nothing changed. My potassium, sodium and thyroid levels were also checked - nothing. Where`s the evil ? Personally I think its more likely the Effexor but my doc points more on the Neurontin. And what about the Lithium ? Any advice ?

Ben,
I to suffered with constipation & bloating. I am on two anitdepressents so my Dr. told me to take milk of mag. every evening. It works like a charm. No more bloating or constipation. You will have to play with the dose until you find the one that works for you. Hope this helps.

Many thanks Zena
unfortunately I tried this also with limited success. I suffer more of serious flatulence than bloating. My language is swiss german so I am not used with words like bloating. I wanted to say flatulence (lot of gas with bad smelling).

i was on effexor for a week or so and had to stop solely because of constipation - NOTHING helped it! i've been on just about everything and can handle side effects, but this was ridiculous! for me to stop a med trial because of constipation, you know it's bad. based on my experience, for what it's worth, i suspect effexor's the likely culprit.

I believe in your story but one week is a little bit short to find out if its the Effexor. In my case it worked over one year without any constipation. How much did you take - thats an other question. Many thanks either
