how to avoid weight gain when stopping adderall

Posted by corine parlee on January 9, 2005, at 17:22:14

Does anyone have advice that they can suggest for someone who is slowly tapering off of adderall? I am weaning myself from adderall xr 10 mg a day and will continue to take Wellbutrin 300 mg/day
I have been taking adderall for inattentive ADD and augmentation of SSRIs for roughly 5 years, but am ready to try life without it. Is it always inevitable that weight gain will occur? I was planning on starting the Atkins program at the same time.

Did you have a huge weight loss while taking it? I am on 30 mg and haven't lost a pound.

I may have lost a couple of pounds but it is really hard to tell, but it certainly wasn't a "huge" weight loss. My general practitioner reports that my weight is within normal range.

Then you probably have nothing to worry about. I'm full blown anorexic and the adderal didn't help me lose any extra weight. My doctor warned me that if I did that he would take me off it.

Thats nice to hear. Many of the posts I have read often discuss all the weight they gained when discontinuing adderall, and place blame on the drug itself...not their eating habits. I have also read that adderall raises the metabolism which is why people gain weight when they stop taking it, and I figured if I go on a high protein diet like Atkins, than I can avoid that. I become very apprehensive (and honestly terrified) by the thought of gaining weight, which is the aspect of the eating disorder that may always be with me to some extent. Thanks for your input Maxime.
