Need advice on taking Nardil and Klonopin

Posted by anony on December 30, 2004, at 14:56:31

I've SA. Is it better if I take only Klonopin regularly or with Nardil?

All the warnings about taking MAOI sound really scary to me.

Also, if I take Klonopin regularly, I'll eventually build tolerance to it, and it won't work any more. Then, what's the point of starting the drug from first place?

I wonder how ppl with SA are dealing with these.

I've been taking Klonopin for nearly two years at the same dosage and have only had to increase it when I add another med to battle the low grade depression that Klonopin seems to cause. It's very effective for SA and generally it takes a long time to build up tolerance to the anxiolytic effects. For people using it primarily as a sleep aid, tolerance builds up much more quickly. By the way, for people with true primary anxiety disorders, it is NOT addictive!

Nardil is extremely good for SA as well, and when I took it I was also taking about .25 - .50 mg of Klonopin. Nardil, for me anyway, was truly a prosocial med and it doesn't cause the depression that Klonopin does. Regarding the "cheese effect", the current philosopy seems to be that as long as you follow the prohibited food list, monitor your blood pressure and keep an emergency supply of nifedipine, beta blocker or thorazine (different people have different ideas of which is best), you'll be fine.

A couple more things about Nardil - for men, myself included, it made me more interested in sex but harder to acheive orgasm and/or maintain an erection. But this side effect usually goes away after a couple of months. Also, beware mixing it with alcohol (even the safe kind). I'm not bipolar, but I had a full blown out of this world manic attack when I combined the two substances.

Good luck. Both drugs are great for SA.

Hi Anony -

MAOIs are very safe. I would take one over a TCA any day. I am on a high dosage of Parnate and I also take 4 mg of Klonopin. I have been on the same dosage of Klonopin for 3 years now. I use it as a mood stabiliser for bipolar illness.

It is safe to take Nardil and Klonopin together.

There is a YAHOO group for people who are taking MAOIs. You should join and ask them questions. I think it will help to lessen your fear of med. They are a great group of people and very helpful.

Good luck to you.
