I took 10mg of Ambien last night for the first time in several months and I felt like I was tripping. I had taken Ambien a few times before and I don't remember anything strange, it just completely knocked me out.
But this time it took me a while to fall asleep and things started to get really weird. It's hard to explain how I felt, just very odd like I was living the book that I was reading. The only time that I have felt anything like this before is when I took mushrooms.
Anyone else have a weird experiences w/Ambien?

I haver already answered my own question here. I just googled Ambien + hallucinogen and came up with a lot of anecdotes about hallucinations on Ambien.
My favorite one so far is from a woman who "sees elves a lot when I trip on Ambien."

Well,
When I take Ambien 10mg I can stay up and I do not hallucinate. I don't take it often.. Maybe once or twice a week for the chronic insomnia when it really kicks in and the herbals don't help.
For me it's a very mild hypnotic. I do stay asleep. Normally, without Ambien I wake several times per night.
I also wake up refreshed.
So, I think this is another case of "your mileage may vary..."

I think pretty much everything is a case of "your mileage may vary." I definately had some mild hallucinations my first night on Ambien, but the past two nights that I have taken it have been hallucination-free.
I have to say, though, that it doesn't seem to work any better for me than melatonin does.

I would agree YMMV.... the first time I ever took Ambien, I had taken midterms and I was up for hours beyond a normal day, and within 20 minutes I felt being pulled into the bed, with a slight spinning effect, sort of like a combination of beckoning "into the womb" and "its allright" with a gentle hypnosis.
I would add, I have never had that experience again with Ambien, ever... unfortunately... that was one of a small handful of "fun" prescription drug experiences and I'm not one for dabbling in hallucinogens (though I dont hold morals in those who try). At the moment I still use Ambien to augment sleep but it doesnt produce that at all.
Ambien is classified as a sleep-hypnotic and works indirectly on GABA-BZ so it is theoretically possible to hallucinate... more likely to sleepwalk or be unsure of one's situation if you take it with out the intention of getting, say, 5 hours of sleep at least.

Info on Ambien...

Speaking of nightmares, I had a very vivid dream last night about an old friend of mine telling me sha had AIDS. 100% sure this was caused by the Ambien: the topic was completely out of nowhere and it was so real that it took me till about noon today to work things out in my head and realize that I was dreaming.
