I think I'll stop meds

Posted by owenus32 on November 30, 2004, at 14:13:14

I was depressed on Lexapro 20 and klonpin 1 mg and I tried to switch to wellbutrin but had an allergic reaction. Now I think, why go on any anti depressant?? I've been on these for 6 years! I think I should just not take them. My life isn't so merry on them anyway. Only thing is getting off the klonpin or can I stay om that without it making me " depressed"

Hi,
I came off all meds and am doing really well. I know there are so many different senarios as to coming off the meds but make the decision for yourself. What is your DX?

I am Medium depression and severe genral anxiety and slightly obsessive lol. Anyway, been on meds for 6 years and I think it's time to stop. The lexapro is no prb but the klonopin will take months. I'm stopping health insurance next month because I'm unemployed and my pdoc will help me out in any way he can. I was a reall mess when I quit drinking and I think I can do it now as long as I use the tools that are given to me instead of isolating at home.

I support you 100%, but only if you taper the meds and not just stop. You don't want to make that mistake, trust me. I was on Klonopin 1.5 mg and Anafranil 275mg and just stopped and got thrown into hell. I went back on meds and then tapered. I was on these meds also for 6 years. In January it will be 6 years since I've been med-free.

What worked the best for me was physical exercise, really made a difference with moods and everything else.

It will take some time, but above everything you have to promise to yourself that if it gets too tough, that if you really can't manage that you are willing to go back on medication. Sounds simple enough, but I've been there and when you're in that space, all you can think about is how you feel like a failure for going back on. Nope. The decision to try to stop is very courageous and if it doesn't work out the first time, it may work out the second. I still reserve the right to go back on if I need to, it's OK. Continue therapy and tackle the issues as they come up and intensify, IF they intensify. You may find that it's not that hard. Some on this site have said that it was relatively easy for them to discontinue meds.

Good Luck,

tt

I would suggest one of the following 2 options:

1) Increase the Lexapro. I personally have been doing very well on 30 mg Lexapro.

2) Try stopping the Lexapro to see how you do without it. But go back on it if your depression returns. Go off of it very gradually over a period of at least 3 weeks. But keep taking the Klonopin. It's possible that you will only need the Klonopin. Also, if you quit both at once and then you feel bad, you won't necessarily know which medication is responsible.
