Appetite Suppressants

Posted by jms600 on November 29, 2004, at 17:31:18

Hi,

Need some help! I'm currently on a number of drugs and my appetite has gone through the roof! I'm piling on pounds by the week and so have decided to try an appetite suppressant, however I don't know which to try, and don't know which will be SAFE to take with the medication I am on.

I'm currently on-

40mg Prozac
2000mg Sodium Valproate (for anxiety - i'm not
epileptic or bi-polar)
30mg Baclofen (for Nystagmus - an eye condition)
10mg Cetirizine (for dust allergy)

Can anyone recommend a good appetite suppressant (synthetic or natural) I could take which will kill my appetite, have minimal side-effects and is SAFE to take with the drugs I have listed above? I am very cautious - as i know you can't take appetite suppressants such as Phentermine with SSRIs.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks!

hi! Well, in terms of Rx'd drugs you have : Meridia (under investigation), Phentermine, Bontril, Tenuate, and Didrex. Some docs actually like mixing diet drugs with anti-depressants...the theory is that the AD acts as a booster. I've taken some with ADs and no harmful effects; its similar to taking adderall with an AD, since these drugs are modeled after amphetamines. Anyway, phentermine is OK, Bontril is stronger, Tenuate is OK, and lots of people loooove didrex, but I think Bontril is just as good. Other than that...bitter orange is supposedly a good natural alternative. Good luck!

you could try wellbutrin instead of Prozac. It helps suppress appetite. I gained a lot of weight on SSRI's and have already lost half of it since switching to a combination of wellbutrin and topamax (for depression and migraine)

Topamax also is a powerful appetite supressant and can work as a mood stabilizer. The combination of the two has been great for me. I am on a low enough dose of Topamax that I don't suffer from the terrible side effects that you read about.

i took phentermine for about 1.5 years - along with prozac and effexor. i loved the psychological effects - very warm and fuzzy mood elevation- but the "side effects" were horrendous: i gained weight like a pig, my left foot swelled up, i got a fatty cyst on my ankle, and it was utterly impossible to get an erection, even with viagra and/or cialis. as far as i'm concerned, phentermine is garbage.
