I have got Lyrica today!!

Posted by Kristel on November 22, 2004, at 11:42:57

Hello,

I just have a great doctor. He gave me Lyrica! I got only 14 tablets of 150mg size.

I want to try 600mg at once. But I might need to get up to that gradually.

Would this be OK?
To take 150mg first day, 300mg the second day, and then 450mg and 600mg?

The official guidelines say to take 150mg 3 days, then going up to 300mg for a week and then to 450mg. Would it be dangerous to go up the dose rabidly?!

I am taking this in the hope to help my Social Anxiety. I know that jbl121 has very good experience with it. Hope to hear from you jbl121!

Thnx!
Kristel

First off, is the doctor prescribing this off-label because you showed him the clinical trial evidence, or was he/she aware of pregabalin's clincal trial efficacy beforehand?

The clinical trial's I have read show no efficacy for social anxiety below 300mg, and waiting three days to acclimate yourself is not long in the scheme of things. For comparison, Americans may have to wait years before Pfizer gets approval. Who knows?

Pregabalin's half-life is rather short, 6.3 hours, which is why twice a day or three times a day is the regimen chosen in the trials.

According to clinical trial evidence, the day you're most likely to experience an adverse event is day 6, so even if you feel dizzy and tired 6 days from now, I wouldn't say it has necessarily failed you at that point.

Americans need to wait for years because Pfizer is so eager to get an indication for GAD. The FDA has other consideration other than clinical efficacy and Pfizer just looking for any way to get more and more money! Typical US giant!

I don't think it would be years thought. You might get it by the begining of 2005. I think it's more up to Pfizer than the FDA!

My doctor rxed it off-label. I have tried a lot of things (except MAOI) that don't work so...

He's not representative for doctors here at all. I have been terribly lucky to have him as my GP.

My doctor also didn't know about it. But he was honest and told me that. But in fact he has recieved an update from the health deperartment about Lyrica, since it's not mentioned in the 2004 "medical bible".

He read it fully while I waited and finally he agreed! I hear about many difficult doctors here at ps babble but my doctor seems really special.

I hope it's worth the money:) It would be liitle costly compared to the insurance covered antidepressants and Klonopin.

I will update!
Take care,
Kristel

You're one lucky lady :)

I live in the UK where its available, no chance of getting it off label though. I wish you good luck, I know jbl121 is having some very interesting results.

I want to wish you good luck as well. There are various things on the radar screen for social anxiety sufferers: EMSAM, pregabalin, and ocinaplon. If and when SA folks start taking it and disappearing from this board, that'll likely be a good sign :)

I'll drink to that! (nm) » pseudonym

First, I have to say how great my shrink is. At my behest, he pulled information on the clinical trials. We went down a list of pros and cons for taking the Lyrica. After 10 years of my trying this and that, (including non-drug solutions), he was willing to let me try Lyrica despite less than outstanding performance in clinical trials.

Anyway... I started Lyrica 5 days ago. I'm over 215lbs and I've been taking Neurontin (for neuropathic pain & GAD), so I started at 300mg. The next day, I felt no side effects, so I went to 600mg. Side effects have been fairly mild. I feel *somewhat* like I've had a couple of drinks. A little stupid w/ some minor dizzyness.

At the same time that I started with the Lyrica, I stopped taking Klonopin. Despite the rather abrupt transition, I've been feeling pretty good. While eating out with my extended family, my mother commented to my wife that I seemed in an especially good mood. I also haven't missed the Klonopin at all.

So I'm experiencing a fairly positive result. However, since Neurontin, prescribed originally for neuropathic pain, had a positive-but transient-impact on my anxiety, it's far too early to pass judgment. Let's just say I remain hopeful.
