Lamictal people-help!

Posted by banga on November 21, 2004, at 17:32:32

I will finally be seeing a psychopharmacologist for a second opinion on long-standing depression, GAD. I have tried all SSRIs and some TCAs with pnly partial relief, especially with the anxiety.
For those with unipolar depression, how did you fare with Lamictal? What do you combine it with? AND has it helped with anxiety?? Benzos are not an option for me....
I want to hae some ideas of what I will consider a good med to try next before my meeting wednesday--it's ultra expensive and I want to make the most of it.

Hey Banga,

I started Lamictal 2 months ago. I'm at 200mgs along with 20mgs Prozac. This combo has definitely taken the edge off--no more crashes, mellowed the anxiety. But remember your mileage may vary....

Be well,
Hugo

Hi

The reason you are probably having problems on monotherapy with AD's is the absence of a mood stabilizer. Lamictal is one of the best mood stabilizers out there with a low side effect profile. You have to be very patient, as this drug must be increased slowly to reach a therapeutic response. Being on a mood stabilizer will allow your antidepressant to work the way it should and keep your moods more even. You may need a less dose of your antidepressant while on this drug. It has AD properties that are an added bonus compared to others.

I agree with the others. It took a while to get to MY theraputic level of lamictal (300mg) but its worth it. I take it with 20mg of prozac and have felt better than i have in a long time. I do take a benzo though, because i have panic disorder. But regardless, lamictal is a good drug.
