The folks who post here are very willing to give you support. What we cannot do is be face to face help for you, which is what I believe you need. I know you have said hospitalization is not an option, but I really think that is what you need. Or, at the very least, a doc or therapist you can be in close contact with. Just by the history of your posts here, I'm not sure how successful you can be at home, on your own, trying to get to the point that meds will help you. I think it may take 24/7 care to guide you and support you with IMMEDIATE help with dosing, med choice, and reassurence.

Suggesting other meds or changes is a good idea, in theory, but what I think is the big issue is getting you to where you will actually be able to take the meds. No amount of suggestions for meds is going to matter unless you can ingest them without total, complete fear.

I'm not trying to put you down or make you feel badly. I really would like you to find a way out of this and I think you could be successful in your treament if you could break the cycle of being terrified of taking the meds that could really make a big impact on your functioning.

Hi Donna,

If you'd like to try another benzo instead of diazepam you could always try lorazepam (Ativan).

Hi,

Well, I can't really advise you to take someone else's medication! If you want your GP to prescribe it you should ask him why he thinks it's ok to give you diazepam but not lorazepam. Personally, I prefer lorazepam but my current pdoc doesn't prescribe it. Many uk docs seem to be under the impression that it has a higher potential for abuse than diazepam. How wrong they are! In my opinion, diazepam seems to produce a mild 'high' that I've never experienced with other benzos.

Show this to your doc.............

Types of benzodiazepines abused by chemically dependent inpatients.

Malcolm R, Brady KT, Johnston AL, Cunningham M.

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston 29425.

Records of inpatients (N = 1,483) over a three-year period at an addiction treatment center were evaluated for the presence of benzodiazepine (BZ) dependence (N = 136). The preferred BZ for 43% of the subjects was diazepam, and alprazolam for 14% of subjects. Chlordiazepoxide, lorazepam, and clorazepate were each the preferred BZ for 4% of patients. Cocaine and opioid abusers were six times more likely to abuse diazepam than any other BZ. Alprazolam patients required a significantly longer period of detoxification than diazepam patients. Four percent of BZ-dependent patients (N = 6) abused BZs only and had no other substance abuse history.

Ed

Didn't want to come off harsh and I think I did. I appreciate your kind spirit.

I wish you could get Klonopin, but I beleive that's not possible in the UK.

Ativan is a good choice and I hope you can make a case with your doc to get it prescribed at a good dose for you.

Hugs back to you.
