Nardil and hypotension

Posted by maddog on October 31, 2004, at 20:28:52

Hi Everyone,

I've been on Nardil for 12 weeks now (8 weeks @ 75mg/day) and I am experiencing quite strong hypotension. Before NArdil I would run 5K 2-3 times per week. Now, I can run only 3-4 blocks before having to walk. I frequently have dizzy spells after climbing stairs. My normal BP is 90/60, I'm not sure what it is now while on Nardil.

In any case, I'm wondering if this is a side effect that goes away after time or is it one of those side effects that stays.

Any suggestions appreciated!

As I've mentioned in the past, I had significant problems while on Nardil similar to what you're describing, and my normal BP is close to 140/90. The other factor that you don't mention is heart rate, which I feel also plays a role. My pulse while on Nardil was commonly down in the 50's, and combined with the lower than normal BP, the lowered cardiovascular output caused all sorts of problems.

About the only thing you can do on your own is increase your salt intake. Beyond that, you might want to look at a prescription drug of some type to raise your BP and/or heart rate. It has to be done carefully, but I've read of a low dose of a stimulant such as d-amphetamine being used to counter MAOI hypotension. This type of effect, BTW, is the chief reason Parnate is much less prone to cause these hypotension problems, as its stimulant effect tends to cancel out the MAOI effect on BP and heart rate. Some people still have problems even with Parnate, though, especially if they have low BP to begin with.
