Zyprexa

Posted by Michael D on October 27, 2004, at 16:14:19

I know that Zyprexa has a 30ish hour half-life and come to their maximum dose after only 5 to 7 days. I also know that it often takes weeks, if not months for Zyprexa to affect people with Schizophrenia. Does anyone have any other information on how quickly Zyprexa 'kicks in'?

Did you notice most of your changes in the first week? Or the first months?

I have depression with psychotic features. For me, it took the Zyprexa about 1 1/2 months to kick in.

Hi Michael, I'm bipolar. For me it helps with the intense, uncontrollable irritability of a mixed episode within four or five hours. It takes three or four days to start working on my depression. It’s been a miracle drug for me.

I noticed the anti-anxiety effects within a few days. I'm trying to wean myself off it, and I'm definitely experiencing greater anxiety.

I noticed the first change with the first dose, in the first hour. I'm not scitzophrenic. I'm schitzoaffective. The pill reaches peak plazma concentrations in 3-5 hours.

My son had a "major" episode of schizophrenia in July of 2003. After a brief unsuccessful month with Abilify he was switched to Zyprexa. On the first day the sleep inducing property of Zyprexa went to work. The full anti-psychotic effectiveness was not realized for at least 2-3 months later although it gradually started to work after about 2 weeks. He was started on 10 mg and upped to 20 mg because his recovery was slow. He is also taking 75 mg of Zoloft which has helped to relieve stress and also to ease the "flat-affect" symptoms. He has gained quite a bit of weight but his improvement over time has been amazing. His Zyprexa has been lowered to 15 mg. per day, any lower than that and some symptoms begin to return.
A major episode of schizophrenia can cause damage which will repair in time provided the patient stays on medications. Good Luck and God Bless!

Hi, I've been on Zyprexa for over 4 years. It's effect on decreasing my sucidal thoughts were within 12 hours. I use to take 5mg, but since I still get episodes of sucidal thoughts every few months my pdoc has had me raise it to 10mg. I find that I'm able to sleep for very long periods of time - 15-20 hours if I want. On weekends I sleep alot. On week nights I get at least 10 hours before I go to work. Does anyone else have this effect? I'm wondering if I'm getting that "flattening" affect as well.

Max effects happen over a little more time. Usualy 3 months for me. 2 weeks and you should be feeling better.

I'll worn you that 3 years and it will stop working. You need to cut down the dose for a while, then after a few months you can go back up and it works again.
