antipsychtoic withdrawal symptoms

Posted by lostforwards on October 22, 2004, at 2:50:23

I've been off of my antipsychotics ( for bipolar ) for 3 weeks but I keep waking up with a dry mouth and rigidity as well as mild confusion. While on the antipsychotic my awareness would be hazy, and I had muscle stiffness, difficulty breathing (mornings after taking it ) sometimes and I would have increases in body temperature in the evenings. Nothing more serious than that but I'm worried I may have had a mild case of NMS or something like it.
I really don't know what it is.

What's causing my symptoms even after being off the meds for weeks?

AP withdrawal

Hi. It sounds like it was a REALLY good idea for you to discontinue that particular antipsychotic. I don't personally think you had NMS; AP's can cause all the side effects you mentioned w/o being life-threatening. Anyway, as for the withdrawal, talk to your shrink, and soon. Did you taper off or did you cold turkey it? Cold turkey discontinuation will make your side effects worse and longer lasting. When I stopped my AP more or less cold turkey, I got an Rx for sleeping pills and upped my benzo....it helped TREMENDOUSLY. You might have a lingering case of TD or something, but that usually goes away after AP discontinuation.

That's definitely not Tardive Dyskinesia (TD). TD is really much worse than lostforward is describing. It is usually a dyskinetic series of facial movements that look like the individual is puckering in a strange way. They come in series though, that's the important part.

I agree that the symptoms will abate given time, most likely.
