Best benzo for airplane flight?

Posted by cubbybear on October 14, 2004, at 23:03:45

I'll be flying for 17 hours on Sunday and always experience insomnia and mental excitement on plane flights (have been sleeping well at home). Since I'll want to sleep for at least 4-5 hours on the plane, what would be the best benzo (and dose) for this short-term use (Xanax or Klonopin)?

My first choices would be a larger than normal dose of Ambien or the antipsychotic Seroquel if you can get your hands on that. Its often used for sleep and can also work for anxiety. Neither are benzos (Ambien is similar to one) but they would be worth checking into. Seroquel can knock you out especially if its your first time taking it. If you have to go with a benzo maybe you should think of Klonopin.

I didn't mention it in my original post, but I'm currently taking 40 mg/day of MAOI Parnate and can't mess around with any of the meds that you mentioned, except the benzos. Besides, I happen to have a few left-over Klonopin and Xanax in the house from previous prescriptions.

I don't think Ambien or Seroquel is contradicted with Parnate if you really wanted to give one of them a shot.

I am soon flying.

I will take 6-8mg Xanax as a single dose + 25-100mg Seroquel.

This will knock me out for the duration of the flight!

Nardil 90
Risperidone 2
Xanax 2

airplane benzos

I'd mix and match. Klonopin is great for long-lasting anxiety relief, and it reduces the amount of xanax you'll need for sleep, since you'll be partially sedated anyway. Sooo, my advice would be klonopin 1-2 hours before boarding (so it'll start to peak during flight) and then however much xanax you need for a midlength nap (I don't know your tolerance level, so its hard to make recommendations on dosage). If you can get a quickie Rx, Sonata's good for inflight sleep. Its Ambien-esque, but with shorter half-life, so you can wake up clear-headed and bright eyed after 3-4 hours...with ambien, it would take 7 hrs + to wake up clear headed.

if you can find someone to lend you some Valium, 20 mgs of that and you will be out like a light if you wish, and should only wake up when prompted. Might have a hangover effect though, does with me.

No need for me to ask for a handout. I happen to have a few 2 mg. tabs of Valium in my little "benzo" chest also. But,20 mg.? They would probably have to scrape me off the plane if I took half that amount.

My point exactly, (lol), but then i never did do things by halves.

My point being that imo, of the openly available benzos i think valium is quick acting but highly sedating at reasonably high doses (personally i would take 10mgs and be out for about ten hours, but i changed my reccomendation for your 17 hour trip :) )

I once took 30mgs Valium all at once and didn't even feel drowsy. Many ppl would be lying on the floor after this dose!

Ace,

Your post made me smile, and I hope your flight will be a long one! I often take just a bite out of a 25 mg. of Seroquel on the weekends before I go to bed, and I sleep like a baby until at least lunch time the next day. If I have to get up too soon I have that dreaded hang over effect but if I let the pill run it's course, it's the best sleep ever.
