Wanna keep My Girly Figure, So...

Posted by Weenie on October 8, 2004, at 9:07:21

I was wondering... has anyone experienced weight GAIN with Wellbutrin XL or Geodon, I just started taking those for bipolar beginning at very low doses of 40mg / day Geodon and 150 mg / day Wellbutrin XL, along with 300 mg / day of Topamax which has decreased my appetite, but I hope that these two other meds do not increase it again or bring any weight on. I'm sure that the dosage will also be increased at some point and I was wondering if I can get some feedback from people who have used these. The lit for Wellbutrin side effects indicates weight loss OR gain, so that doesn't say much, and Geodon is supposed to be weight neutral, but it still makes me skeptical. Your feedback on the weight issue and other side effects would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Geodon and Wellbutrin are both pretty weight-neutral. Beware: a drug similar to Geodon, Zyprexa, causes MAJOR weight gain. I've also experienced weight gain with effexor.

Both Wellbutrin and Topamax are known to help people lose weight. I'm uncertain about the Geodon though.

Thanks, I'm about 125 now 30 yr old f, and gaining weight would be my biggest fear. I want something taht would eep me from being anxious and spazzing out on my friends when they piss me off but will also not make me want to stay home and sleep off my depression that hits me out of the blue (usually in relation to a guy or my career). So the Topamax 300 / mg is ok in neutralizing my mood, i'm a bit more laid back and my appetite is WAY down, just added the Wellbutrin and the Geodon though and was wondering what is the average dose to feel good and balanced... and to actually lose weight if you know?

I know the typical dose of Wellbutrin is usually 300mg. I'm not sure about the Geodon. I've heard the wellbutrin can cause people to become angry, and anxious although this may not happen to you. It definitly has not happened to me. I've heard after being on Wellbutrin on awhile that it can actually lower anxiety. The initial symptoms when starting it can make it worse with some people though. Just hang in there. I think it's a wonderful drug.

Desoxyn is FDA-approved for exogenous obesity and AD/HD. You might find some weight reduction from it. It's proven effective for weight loss, and millions have used it for this purpose since it came out in 1944. (Although most of this use was during the 50's and 60's).

I take Welbutrin, and am currently on 300mg per day. My daughter takes it also, as well as Topamax. She has a binge eating disorder and is also depressed. The Welbutrin works very well, and kept her from gaining last year while she was on it, at 450mg. She went off it because it made her really hot and sweaty, started taking Lexapro 40mg. THAT made her gain weight rapidly, and she is now back on Welbtutrin and Topamax. It does help with depression, but I think it may be making me anxious a bit. Keep us informed as to how you are doing, and I will post any new information that I find. -L

She is on 100mg a day. 50mg in the am and 50mg in the pm. I just went to see her doc. today, and he is supposed to be calling us back about increasing her dosage. What mg. are you currently taking?, and are you having many side effects? She has tingling feet, and is thirsty, but other than that nothing else to report. Her doc. told me that many people don't get bad side effects, and it's a faily neutral drug. That made me feel much better, because when I read everything about it I was having second thoughts about her taking it. -L

Did you meen making her anxious? I could not understand if you were speaking about her or yourself?

BTW how is your daughter doing? It sounds like her depression is being addressed.

I myself am feeling better on a little Amisulpride, at least my mood but not adhedonia. Unfortunattely my binge eating and or bulimia seems to be much worse with it. I am thinking that engaging in some activity at all which I was not before the Amisulpride is causing some anxiety which I am addressing with bulimia.
Well I am sure you are not so interested in these personal details.

Believe me, I am interested in personal details. It helps me understand these disorders, and it's great advice. We are all hear to listen, NEVER and I repeat NEVER, feel that we don't want to listen. We're all in that same big boat, and it's rolling side to side!!! I am understanding that you have Binge Eating and Bulemia? One of my daughters friends is bulemic, and she does not try to hide it from her friends. That worries me, but thank goodness she is seeing a PHY. I do know that my daughter was at one time doing the bulemic thing. She says not alot though. Only her PHY know for sure if she is still at it. I don't think so, just binging sometimes. I don't remember if you told me, but are you currently taking Topamax? -L

Bulimics tend to binge eat so that is why I said both. I have been bulimic since I was 15 and am now 45. I was on Topamax for several months. I felt more depressed on it and did not loose or gain weight. I did however gain 30 pounds when I went off of it. I went back on a small amount for several more months and immediately lost the 30 pounds but not more. Then I tapered very gradually off of it and did not gain the weight back this time.

Sorry to have to tell you I did not have a good experience with it.

I take 400 mg. Wellbutrin a day and it's been totally weight neutral for me. I took Geodon and it was also weight neutral but didn't do anything for me. Took Topomax, only got up to about 20mg dose. I lost a little since it killed my appetite. But that effect seemed to wear off after a while, until I upped the dose again. I eventually went off it though since it made me completely stupid.

My daughter is just trying to get the binging under control! She gained some weight on Lexapro, and is hoping at least that will come off. With any type of medication, it seems that it takes a higher dosage for her to get any results. She is taking Accutane for the 3rd, yes 3rd time. Her body is really resistant some medication, and I pray this one works for her. It has stablized her moods...at least I think so. -L
