why does geodon have to be taken with food?

Posted by 4mygrls on October 8, 2004, at 9:47:19

i read somewhere that it has to be taken with food. I really want to take it at bedtime. I'm starting a new job and am going to be working evenings. Right now i take geodon about a half hour after i eat dinner. i'm really tired about 8:00pm. I'll be working till 10:00pm and can't be that tired. I feel stuck and don't know what to do?

not sure that means on a totally empty stomach. I take mine at bedtime. Maybe a glass of milk would do the trick.

I believe that a glass of milk would do the trick.

I used to take Geodon and my pdoc told me to eat two slices of whole wheat bread with my pre-bed dose. I didn't like having to eat before bed, but that was the least amount of food he'd let me eat with Geodon. I don't think a glass of milk would be acceptable.

Have you known it to make you gain weight? I started taking it for bipolar... doc started me w/ just 40 mg / day. Is that enough? Also, will that help me sleep if taken at night? I take in conjunction with 300 mg topamax and just started it w/ 150 mg wellbutrin. So, how does it make you feel, and what is the recommended dosage?

I only take 20mgs a night for psychotic depression. It works and I have even lost weight on it. I am super sensitive to meds though.

i take 160mg at night. it makes me tired at night but other than that i haven't noticed any other side affects. unless the anxiety i feel during the day is from it. but i don't think it is. i'm going to try to take it with bread or something like that. i wonder if fruit would work. like a banana or apple. I could always eat a banana nut muffin(my favorite). but i may put on a few pounds if i do that everynight before bed.lol.

I took 160 mg a day and did not gain weight. I had switched from Zyprexa to Geodon; Zyprexa is usually the med that causes weight gain. I am bipolar. I don’t feel that I should comment on dosages since your doctor would be the one to determine that. Geodon didn’t work out for me and I switched to Risperdal.

I took all 160 mg before bed. I’d asked my doctor if I could eat just peaches when I took Geodon. He said no. I asked him, “How much food do you have to eat with Geodon?” He said they (meaning the drug manufacturer) don’t know the answer to that question. All I can tell you is that my doctor told me to eat two slices of whole wheat bread when I took it before bed.
