Cholesterol Increase with Weight Gain

Posted by invisiblemanpa on September 23, 2004, at 8:15:37

Hi! Quick question...I know many of us have struggled with the horrible weight gain from AD meds. I put on 25 lbs after my first med. and can't loose it though I maintain a very active exercise routine and am almost a vegetarian. My question is; Has anyone else experianced an increase in their Bad cholesterol count (HDL?) and a decrease in their Good count? I just had a routine physical and asked for a full blood test because I am concerned about what these meds are doing to my body, the weight gain I already surmised, but was shocked to hear my cholesterol had jumped from 160 to 200 and vice versa on my good cholesterol, making the ratio of the two that the docs judge by way out of wack. Has anyone else had this happened or heard of a connection with anti depressants???? Thanks!

I know that some AD's, especially Remeron and sometimes Paxil, are known for weight gain. But I have not heard about changes in the ratio of good cholesterol (HDL) to bad cholesterol (LDL) as a result. But maybe an AD can change that ratio. Also, maybe a weight gain by itself can cause a change in the ratio which might reverse with weight loss. Maybe someone else can respond who knows more about this.

My ratios were bad. Then my doc gave me Niaspan (niacin) to raise the HDL and Pravachol (a statin) to lower the LDL. My ratios very quickly made a big change in the right direction.

Hi,

Which drugs were you taking? The antihistamine type AD's & AP's taken daily can cause metabolism problems such as hypergycemia, diabetes & hypertriglyceridemia in thos people who are susceptible.

Cheers,
Paul.

Yes. Seven years of taking Prozac, Paxil and Lexapro, plus Zyprexa, made me gain 50 pounds, and raised my total cholesterol, LDL (the bad one) and triglycerides to abnormally high levels. I had always had a *low risk* lipid profile, but it changed to *medium-high*. I also almost became diabetic (probably the Zyprexa), going from a fasting blood sugar of 70 to one of 112. I just had to get off these drugs, and when I was able to, everything gradually reverted to normal over a 3-year period. Thankfully, this doesn't happen, at least not to such an extreme degree, to most people who take these drugs. I'd be the first to say that they can be extremely valuable, and even life-saving. I do think, though, that watching one's weight, lipids and blood sugar should be given more attention.

Because of the risks these drugs had for me, I had to find some alternative ways of treating my depression. The things that seemed to work best were rTMS, psychotherapy, low dose Wellbutrin and a low dose Synthroid-Cytomel combination.
