Adderall and depression

Posted by jessie77 on September 1, 2004, at 8:05:43

I am currently taking adderall for ADD and wondering if it is making me anxious and depressed. I am also coming off of topamax and starting cymbalta. I thought the topamax was the problem, but now I am starting to wonder if it is the adderall. Is ritalin, strattera or concerta a better choice with adults with ADD who also suffer from depression and anxiety?

Thanks.

Hi Jessie -

I'm no expert, I just wanted to share my own experience with you as well as what my psychiatrist told me.

I started Adderall for adult ADD about two months ago. My biggest problem by far is depression with a lack of motivation, extreme lethargy and the inability to experience pleasure. I really only suffer anxiety during public speaking and social events with people I don't know.

I myself didn't experience any increase in anxiety after starting Adderall (I'm taking 30mg of the XR type). My psychiatrist did warn me though that some people do experience an increase in anxiety when taking Adderall. She makes a point of asking me about it whenever I see her. As for my depression, it didn't make it any worse. Actually, it seems to help a bit. I didn't get a big burst of energy from it. However, now that I'm also taking Wellbutrin, my energy level has gone up and I feel as if I'm coping better.

I've never tried Ritalin or Concerta. I did ty Strattera before Adderall. It only added to my fatigue which for me was the pits.

Best of luck to you. Please let us know what you decide. I hope the Cymbalta works well for you. I'm excited to hear how folks on this board are responding to it!

Charm

I take Strattera. But I take it with 30 mg Lexapro. I don't think that Strattera by itself would handle my depression.

Ritalin is generally good for depression. I don't know about Adderall in that regard.

I know that Topamax can cause fatigue. Were you taking it for migraines? If so, why are you stopping it?

Right now you are starting on cymbalta (aka duloxetine). If I were you, I would just make one change at a time. See how the cymbalta works on your anxiety and depression. Meanwhile, keep taking the adderall for now.
