Please read: could I have drained all dopamine

Posted by noelle on August 24, 2004, at 23:20:01

I give up, I don't know what the hell is wrong with me anymore. No med's work, I have no drive, am apathetic and am so flat I can't even think anymore. a couple years ago I got on adderall and really abused it for months and then it just stopped working. Now no AD's work for me. I can't even drink coffee without feeling tired. I try and work out and I have no energy. What the hell is going on,...I just don't know what to do anymore

The adderall had an effect on your brain which is now gone. If you abused it the effect was even more profound. You will come back to 'normal' whatever that is for you within a matter of weeks.

Is your history straight depresion, is it bipolar, or complicated by chemical dependence?

I have always had aspects of ADD, the disorganization, inability to concentrate and complete things. I also have had depression, very reactive, I took the mmpi test and it showed black hole depression and high levels of axiety. I loved Adderall the moment I took it and didn't abuse it at first but then I started taking it and staying up all night but it was the first time in my life where I felt happy and motivated. I tend to be very apathetic. Then one day it just stopped working, I felt nothing like something had been turned off in my brain. I went on AD, neurontin, and started to try mood stabilizers and every time I try to start Adderall, it works for mabye a day and then nothing. I am very effected by substances, now. I become very depressd when I drink, I fall asleep when I drink coffee. Lately I have weakness all the time. I'm scared and very frustrated.

Your adrenals sound like they’re shot. Go have them tested. I'll bet that's the case. Good luck…

Your experience mimics mine. It is sad that that which finally makes you feel good causes tolerance. Thats why it's a controlled substance with a nasty history. Believe me you are not alone! I'm confident time will heal all your adderall induced whoas having abused dopamine drugs myself in the past. My advice is to stear clear of the stuff you know doesn't work and just let your body get back to wherever it was at. Then try something new. Cymbalta is finally available you know...

Mr. Scott,
Thanks for the feedback, I did spend a year (during pregnancy) not taking it, but the minute I tried it again, same thing. I also spent a couple months drinking a lot which doesn't help. ( self medicating) What is Cymbalta.

Noelle, Go to your Dr. and ask for the test. From what I remember...you get a test package and from it you place a little cotton tube(s) in your mouth 3 or 4 different times during the day for 3 days. They absorb information and such from your siliva. You place the cotton in glass containers and refridgerate them for a few days until the test are done. The cotton you leave in your mouth for only 5 minutes. It's really not that big of a deal. They either will do the test or they overnight the samples to be analyzed. I know of several people like yourself that the test have been life changing. It can't hurt. Insurance pays for it...if not I think it's only around $100. Hope this helps. Jeopardy

What is the test to find out if your adrenals are shot?

I abused phentermine (Ionamin - diet pills) for about three years back in the 70's. It seems to me that's when my depression problems started (or possibly that's why I needed to abuse stimulants in the first place).

Anyway, even after all these years, anytime now I take a stimulant (ritalin, provigil, even the ephedrine, psuedo-ephedrine type drugs) I get the wired effect but not the happy, motivated feeling that used to come with it.

Is it possible I permanently destroyed my ability ever to experience enthusiasm again? Did I burn something out that can't recover? Does anyone else have similar experience? Can someone please explain or just comment? Please? I've wondered about this for years.

Marsha

I agree with Jeopardy about the adrenal testing. A lot of times you have to go to a naturopthic doctor (ND) or an MD who practices holistic medicine to get the test though. My regular MD didn't have a clue about it. It is tested through saliva. Some of the tests just have you fill little vials full of spit during different times of the day. Once you know the state of your adrenals there are different supplements (including adrenal glands of animals!)etc that you can be given to help restore them.

hi, marsha, :)

(this post is concerning your reply about wellbutrin's effects on norepinephrine)

i just wanted to thank you for posting concerning your experience with wellbutrin; i was looking for the post...they seem to disappear so quickly lately! i agree, the energizing/lack of pleasurable effects of the wellbutrin do seem to point to wellbutrin being more norepinephrine-related. i really appreciate you sharing your experience. :)

take care,
amy :)
