WELCOME BK CHEMIST - question 4 u..

Posted by crazychickuk on August 17, 2004, at 20:12:32

Hello chemist and welcome back..

I have a few questions for you, i will try and keep this short.. ok hu humm

3 half yrs ago i started taking 37.5 mg of effexor for mild depression, one night silly me took about 4 or 5 extra for that buzz as all my freinds were on exatsy anyways i had my very first anxiety attack that lasted days and days i obviousley stopped the effexor cold turkey after that night.. i was fine apart from brain zaps etc... anyways i wasnt 100% correct few mnths later around xmas time i had my first panick attack i felt all funny etc etc i was put on valium 2 mg 3 times a day, one day i had a panick attack that lasted days and the valium didnt help any more (doc wont give nothing else) so i was put on celexa but i ended up in hospital on it my blood pressure was very high so was my hrt rate i had the worst ever panick attack as i didnt know what was wrong with me.. i had an mri scan and this obsession about me having something wrong with my brain went away..

I was then put on trazadone which made me panicky and my hrt rate was very low, paxil made my very weird, prozac made me suicidal, (they also raised my bp and hr) so i was sent to a physciatrist who prescribed me zoloft it was wicked for my anxiety it was really good BUT my doctor took me of it on my check up cus my blood pressure was high so was my heart rate...

Then i asked my doctor for remeron i was given remeron and was taking it for 1 half years with no probs apart from the odd day of depression and i knew it was pooping out, and apart from when they changed from tablet to soltab (melt in mouth) i started getting nightmares and panick attacks in my sleep and i was scared so my doctor told me to stop taking them and put me on dothiapen i started taking a very low dose 25mg of dothiapen only for a week though but i didnt liek the affects my hrt was fluttering and my legs were twitching and i felt like i had pins in my head and light was strong!! was strange so i stopped them..

anyways my doctor sent me back to physciatrist and she managed to get hold of 1 mnths supply of remeron the old version tablet form to take but there is just no point as wats the point in starting to take them just for 1 mnth? - and they did poop out on me..

so i am lost now is there any point in taking another tca?- i am afraid of cardio probs.. i have had about 4 ekg's over the mnths and i have a 24 hr monitor schedulled for september.. should ease my mind i am obsessing over a arithmia..

My doctor has given my valium to take as needed BUT i dont find it very helpfull i still get very anxious as if my brain is fighting the affect..

and inderal 40mg to take upto 3 times a day if needed BUT yet again i am afraid of the cardio problems :-(

anyways I was gonna give myself till the middle of september (after holtor monitor) to see how i am and i want to try effexor again ad it worked great for my depression will it be ok for my severe anxiety which is causing depression again :-( and if i start to get a raised hrt rate or blood pressure do u think idneral 10mg wll be ok for me? or do you have any other suggestions..? bare in mind i am in the uk and i am NOT going to see physciatrist again just my gp.. sure he will prescribe what i ask for..

thankyou ...

hello there, thanks for the welcome back! i have omitted the inclusion of your lengthy post here for clarity....if i understand correctly, your concerns in re: heart trouble will be addressed soon, you are currently taking inderal and valium prn, and are considering going back on effexor. yet it seems to me that the primary concern is of the anxiety variety, as bad nerves/agoraphobia/panic attacks/etc. have appeared with regularity in your posts. i hardly think that one night long ago when you boosted your effexor dose can be fingered for any trouble presently, and you apparently tapered off the medication with less-than-severe side effects. i am aware that Sad Panda recommended holding on to your remeron tabs, to be used in times of high anxiety: his advice is rarely out of line or inappropriate from any perspective that i can identify, and i am curious why you are looking back towards effexor instead of a path that, shall we say, is more along the lines of an anxiolytic one? it seems to me that you have tried many drugs that can collectively be classified as antidepressants, yet the anxiety continues to plague you. is alprazolam available in the UK via your healthcare system? i posed this to you a few weeks back, and suggested giving it a try. i will comment that 2 mg of valium is a very small dose indeed, and that for the severity and frequency of your anxiety, is an order of magnitude too small a dose to be of any use. can you report if alprazolam is available to you, or if you can secure a prescription for a larger amount of valium to be taken daily? i see scant evidence that you have exhausted the medications aimed at calming one: rather, you have explored a number of antidepressants from various classes, and in my opinion, you should explore anxiolytics (benzo or not, i will add) before heading back into already trod-upon territory.....please keep us informed, and i wish you the best!....be well, chemist

hello again....i forgot to address your query in re: inderal. this medication should offer you some relief in terms of your heart trouble - whether real or perceived or some combination - and will slightly to moderately enhance the effect of the valium you take. i have seen dosing recommendations ranging from 30 mg/day up to 240 mg/day: your regimen (prescribed) is certainly on the lower side, and lowering it would not benefit you, in my opinion, as the drug is used (among other related notes) to keep arrhythmia at bay. do be sure not to change dose abruptly - and please do consult a doctor if you decide to do this - and be sure not to mix alcohol with this and valium, as the sedative effects will be heightened. all the best, chemist

Hi CC

Why not try zoloft with Indral?

I may try Indral if my heart rate doesn't ease.

Indral will lower your blood pressure.

Lorazepam will probably only be prescribed if you are an out patient in hospital or prown to mania.
I quit my lorazepam cause I get easily tolerant to benzo's and they increase my anxiety...but every 's different.
I'd mention to your doc about CBT..but thats not guaranteed because of the waiting list.
Being demandind helps..but I'm not like that..I'd rather crawl in my bed.

Take care.

**** yes, do try inderal, especially for your heart-related stuff. be cautious of interactions, and be sure to tell your doctor what other meds you are taking, as inderal + many other meds can lead to increased/decreased amounts of the med and/or inderal at work.*****

**** my comments about effexor were reflective - i thought - of your anxiety. if i recall, you had a good run of it, but there was still some anxiety. if i am incorrect, i apologize and if effexor was a winner for you, by all means, do try it again. however, you note your doctor will not prescribe SSRIs again for you: effexor is a second-generation variation of the SSRI theme, and inhibits reuptake of some other chemicals in addition to serotonin. i mention this in case your doctor will not prescribe it again.....*****

***** well, i empathize with you, especially in re: panic attacks. however, you do have on-hand meds that will address this issue at least in part, if not in full, namely valium and inderal. the combination of these two should be calming for you. i am aware that some people have paradoxical reactions to all kinds of medications, and perhaps you are one of them when it comes to benzodiazepines: i just do not know, and would expect your doctor would be able to address this, if it is indeed the case. and finally, anxiolytics are drugs that reduce anxiety: this includes alcohol, drugs such as valium and xanax, and is also used descriptively in cases where, for example, a drug reduces depression and anxiety at the same time. be well, chemist ******
