Risperdal for Emotional/Depression relief...?

Posted by becksA on August 16, 2004, at 17:20:57

I've been battling anxiety/depression for a while now and have recently (2 weeks ago) started 1mg risperdal daily for emotional instability...(I'm easily deeply offended, saddened, excited...etc...) Has anybody experienced help from Risperdal for these symptoms? It feels like I'm stabilizing slightly but not positive, if it's too early yet. Thanks for the input.

"I'm easily deeply offended" is a classic symptom of atypical depression. I'd stick to antidepressants for that. Which ones have you tried?

I've tried every SSRI in the book, so I'm steering clear of that. Other than that, I haven't tried anything new. Have a pdoc appointment tomorow though. any suggestions...

What effects did the SSRI's have? Tried Zoloft? Tried Effexor? After that it's time to try TCA's or MAOI's depending on your other symptoms.

i started taking risperdal about 2 years ago for racing thoughts, anxiety, and depression. my psychologist suggested it for the racing thoughts. over the years my dosage increased to 4 mg. through my regular doctor.

earlier this year i started to see a psyciatrist for help as i was not getting better. he wondered why i was on risperdal for depression because it was not FDA approved for it.

he then added lexapro, and finally bumped that up to 20 mg. and i was feeling really good for a while, then the depression came back and he added lithium as i might be bp2 and he has now changed his mind on taking me off the risperdal for now.

i like risperdal, i takes away the anxious feelings and racing thoughts in the morning( the crazies). but about midday around 2 to 3 pm it seems to wear off.

my only concern now with risperdal is the increase risk of diabetes, as i am already overweight and diabetes runs in my family. so i will probally switch to Seroquel, plus it aids in sleep which i am having a problem with now.

well, that is my experience with it. hope this helps, and you get to feeling better soon!

Seroquel has the same risk AFAIK, so stay on the Risperdal. :)
