MAOI panic

Posted by krisanon on August 4, 2004, at 19:57:49

I just started on an MAOI and I find myself in a panic. I feel paranoid about possible "contaminants". For example, I was cooking some meat on a grill pan that I only use for meat and after I ate I started worrying that my meal was tainted with "fermented protein" from the pan. I know that this is crazy (it doesn't help that I am going off my old meds at the same time), but I guess I'm just scared about this big change in my life. Does it get easier? Do you learn to relax a little?

It does get easier. Although it is good to be cautious. I doubt that your pan would contain enough of anything to trigger a reaction. Remember, it's the quantity of tyramine in foods that is important.

That said, do you have a plan for what you will do if you do ever have a hypertensive crisis? I have instructed my husband and a couple of key people to make sure they tell ER people what is happening in case I can't tell them myself. And I wear a medic alert bracelet I had engraved that says I take MAOI.

Take care!

Yes, you relax after a while. Remember, 80% of reactions are caused by aged cheese. Tiny amounts of potentially dangerous food are not going to hurt you.

You can get a drug called nifedipine from your doc that will bring your BP down if you do accidently eat something that brings on a hypertensive crisis. I keep some with me, but I've never had to use it.
