Help! Horrible withdrawl symptoms from Lexapo

Posted by REM on July 24, 2004, at 13:51:41

I've been on several SSRI's before, and only Paxil had bad withdrawls for me.

I was on 20mg Lexapro, and went down to 10, then 0 over about a week....

It's been three days at 0, and I'm having horrible dizziness, brain zaps, sweats, etc....

I called the pharmacist, and she said to stay off of it, and don't take any.

I'm supposed to be off of it, and don't want back on it, but how long does this last?

Thanks,
Kristin

I would go back on a little bit. 20mg of lex is a lot to get off in one week. No doctor should expect that.

Thanks....

I gave in, and took 5mg last night...I have small children, and can't afford to not be able to take care of them. I think it helped a little bit, but I can't even bend over to pick something up without feeling like I'm going to pass out.

How long does this last?

Going from 10 to 5 was tough enough for me, so I can imagine what you are going through. I have slowed down my taper. I am on 2.5 of Lex right now and will probably stop it all next week. I guess what I am saying is that slowing it down helped. I went from feeling totally awful to sorta bad and manageable. Nonetheless, I know what you are going through. Hang in there

I gave in, and went back on 10. I couldn't walk in a straight line, or function....I'm still dizzy and all that, but like you said, it's getting manageable....I just want off this stuff....

thanks!

I also am trying to taper off lex. I had gone from 10 --> 5 mg and stayed there for 3 wks. Then I started feeling anxious again, snappy, and feeling of hypochondria came back again. (oh, no!) I also got sharp stabbing head-ache pains, in the same spot, periodically (right front temple.) I gave in and went back to 10 mg for a few days & felt more relaxed. I guess I'll try going back to 5 mg but I'm scared. I hate the anxious feeling!

Each time I've tapered off an AD, I've had the same response. And who can afford to not work for a week or however long it takes! The week before last was my final dose of Serzone, which I had been tapering off of for about a month and a half. Every time I would *not* take it (and I was down to chipping pieces off my tablets twice a day), the symtoms would return.

This is what I did: Keep taking a tiny bit every day, making the pieces smaller as you go, and keep track of the time you take it. I always took my day dose of Serzone at noon. So when I got down to the really, really tiny pieces of Serzone, I would wait until 3 or 4 and see if I started getting the symptoms. One day (after about three days of this) I didn't get the symptoms. So I just didn't take it. The symptoms never returned and I was finally off it!

I hope that helps. Other advice: eat really really well and exercise while tapering. Don't put any "junk" in your body and make sure you sweat and are active every day. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice!

I have lyme disease, which makes it impossible to exercize, but I have been drinking a ton of water, and eating well...

Serezone, after one pill, made me feel like I was drunk! 30 min. after I took it, I couldn't walk....that was 3 years ago....scary!
