Question about AD: Could use some advise.

Posted by steve12 on July 22, 2004, at 16:01:05

I appreciate any feedback: I'm 32 old, white male, who has been on AD for 10 years or so. I'm currently on 150 mgs. of Effexor XR, (which I sometimes take 75 day 1 and 150 alternate day to avoid side-effects). I'm considering a swtich b/c 1) I want to avoid sexual side effects and severe hyperhidrosis I experience when I take Effexor (and other SSRI's: Prozac, Celexa) at an optimal dose to relieve anxiety/ panic (depression is okay now). I'm considering Lexapro, but years ago I was on Celexa and had the famous "poopout" with breakthrough panic -- and considering that Lexapro is just non-r Celexa, this might happen again (but interestingly many folks on Lexapro report great anxiolytic effect). What options do I have? Zoloft= noloft; Serzone - tried, not a real AD in my opin; Wellbeturin - I've used as an adjunt: anxious, I need serotonin! Why wait for duloxitine? just another Effexor.

Also: I take Andogrel 5G for pit adenoma diagnoised 4 yrs ago -- in good control.

Thanks, sorry for the long post!

I guess the one I would suggest considering is the tricyclic nortriptyline. This is anxiolytic and lacks the sexual side effects of the SSRIs, as it is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It is moderately sedating, but it only has weak anticholinergic effects for a tricyclic. I like desipramine better myself, but I don't believe this is a good choice for someone looking for help with anxiety. I wouldn't bother with any of the SSRIs considering the difficulties you have already experienced. I would try a different class of antidepressant.

Thanks Todd for the suggestion, however I was on Pamalor years ago and it was ineffective. I won't consider the tris b/c of their side-effects.
