Alternative to Zyprexa? Abilify? Risperdal? Other?

Posted by DanielJ on July 15, 2004, at 11:29:54

This is relates to my previous post. I think eventually the Zyprexa will have to be replaced with another AP. It has worked extremely well for psychological healing but weight gain is getting dangerous with a 16 yr old having high blood pressure and cholesterol etc. Are there any AP med success stories out there? We gotta do something soon even if it means some temporary madness till things get adjusted!

Hi Daniel J.:
Quite a long time ago, ... possibly around in 1999, I read that you could take both Zyprexa and Risperdal. However, your son needs his pdoc.'s professional recommendation. Because, everyone reacts differently on different medication/med. combo.
In drastic measures, even hospitalization might be one of 'best choices' to find a right med. combo.

I've never tried Geodon, but that might be the best answer. It is sedating with no weight gain. My guess is that it is more like zyprexa than abilify. They use it as an alternative therapy when side-effects of other AP are not working. I was going to try it, but the doc swithed to Abilify, as it had just come out.

I have never tried Zyprexa, but I have tried a few of the other antipsychotic medications. I'm currently taking Geodon and Risperdal for my psychosis (hearing voices). The voices are 100% gone, so this must be working. I've noticed a bit of weight gain from the Risperdal. I haven't noticed any from the Geodon. Both Risperdal and Geodon are sedating, although over time, I've gotten used to it and have been able to stay awake longer.

I used to take Abilify before I started with Geodon. Abilify was very activating to me. It made me agitated. I didn't gain any weight on Abilify, I probably lost some. I swapped it out due to the extreme agitation.
