Scary Zyprexa Scale Down!

Posted by DanielJ on July 15, 2004, at 11:04:01

My son has been on 20 mg Zyprexa for almost a yr. and over the last few weeks we scaled down the dosage to try to bring his weight down and ease his difficulty with swallowing (another side effect). He went to 15 mg with no noticeable change then to 10 mg where a few strange things appeared. At our latest pdoc visit he insisted on dropping it to 7.5 mg which I totally disagreed with. Today he told my wife "You can't tell me what to do". That was a phrase from 8 months ago.
Last night he went out to the porch and sat staring into space. That was a symptom from 10 months ago and there are others (obsessions, compulsions) duh! dx = schizophrenia. I think we need to go back to 15 mg Zyp. Advice?

Go back to 15. or at the very least 10. Thats the thing with it, when you get a little taste of a decrease. You feel good, real good. Think you can feel even better, till its all gone, 8 days latter. Anxiety, full blown panic, everything goes wrong. Then you won't realise, belive or want to go back on the med. Till you do. Then you will bow never to go off it again. It may be good to put him on 15 for a while then see if 10 will work. It might work, but take a long time to adjust. Figure out witch dose has least side-effects and most benifit.

Hi Daniel J.:
I, too agree with you. Despite a weight gain, your son needs appropriate dosage of Zyprexa.
When I decreased to 2.5 mg. from the 5 mg. zyprexa, my moods were in a big mess because of 'lack of sleep' combined with 'irritability.'
then, I went right back to the original dosage. In my case, luckily or not, I didn't gain a weight except just a few pounds.

While I was 'lurking' here, about a couple of weeks ago, I read someone with Bp I who has been taking *20 mg.* Zyprexa along with other meds. one of which was Adderal/similar to Ritalin. Then, I just wonder how this person dealing with 'weight issue' associated with Zyprexa. If you would happen to bump into this poster, you'd better to get some 'good' opinion as to 'weight issue.'
Hopefully, someone else could offer 'good' alternative to Zyprexa.
H.G.

If he needs to be on an AP I would cross taper him to one of the others & try that. Risperdal, Seroquel, Geodon & Abilify are the others, Abilify & Geodon probably have less problems with weight gain.

Cheers,
Panda.

Second thought, why not try the 10 mg for a while? It may be enough to keep his simptoms under control, and lose some weight at the same time.

Re: Scary Zyprexa Scale Down! Up to 15 mg. worked!

Thanks for your posts. My son was a little upset by me upping the dose to 15mg (I called the pdoc to confirm but he hasn't responded yet). I recalled the beginnings of psychotic breakthru at 10 mg so I think we dropped it too fast and too much. He's back on 15 mg and 100% better. He even revealed to me the story of how his problem began last summer. After hearing his story I believe we will be on this or a similar scrip indefinitely. Thank God it helps!
