help! weight gain

Posted by malthus on July 1, 2004, at 11:24:18

I am currently on 225 mg. of Effexor, .5 mg of Klonopin twice a day, and my doctor has just started me on Lamictil 25 mg. every other day for a week, 25mg. a day the second week and 50 mg. a day the third week. I have gained almost 25 lbs. over the past year because she has tried me on so many different drugs. I think the biggest culprits were Xyprexa and Seroquel which I have stopped taking. Now I am finding it very difficult to lose weight even though I am eating very healthy foods and exercising three times a week. I feel so hopeless. I took Serzone for seven years and was consistently 130-135 lbs.(sometimes less). I'm 5 feet 5 1/2 inches and weigh about 157 now. She's putting me on the Lamictil for resistant treatment depression and Bipolar 2. Currently I am extremely depressed and the weight is making it so much worse. Does anyone have any advice or a similar experience? Help!!!!

Zyprexa was the big culprit for weight gain for me, too. I ate less and kept gaining weight. I was told again and again to exercise, but when you're depressed, that's the last thing you're able to do! If you can, try walking every day.

In my case, when I was put on Wellbutrin XR along with the Effexor XL, the weight *vanished*. Finally, I'm motivated to exercise and go to a gym 3 x week. My therapist agrees with me that the way p-docs dismiss the weight gain side effects of antidepressants is counter productive. It only adds to your anxiety to be getting heavier in addition to being depressed. The medical profession is starting to acknowledge the negative effect the weight gain has on patients. Every person reacts differently to different medications. Maybe at your next appointment you could discuss this aspect with your doctor, as it's causing you distress.

good luck.

Have you had your sugar levels checked lately? Zyprexa & Seroquel have neen known to cause hyperglycemia & Diabetes.

Dear Panda:

Called the doctor as soon as I read your message. Left her a message. She will get back to me with the info. No, I haven't had my sugar levels checked. Thanks for your reply
