How long does the effect of Provigil last

Posted by Maxime on June 20, 2004, at 17:47:52

Hi.

Well Ritalin didn't work. I would like to try Adderall but I think my PDOC is going to go for Provilgil first.

I take Parnate right now and I still have depression and in the afternoon my ability to concentrate goes DOWN. I become more lethargic and tired. That is why we are trying these meds.

If I take Provigil, how long will it last? Will I crash like I did on Ritalin? What is the usual dosage?

Any positive experiences with Provigil?

I've been on every anti-depressant there is and anti-psychotics etc.

Thanks.

Maxime

I've been taking 100mg of Provigil in the morning for a week now and it lasts until I got to bed which sometimes is after midnight. I agree with what I've read here, it helps you stay awake when you want to, but doesn't stop you from sleeping at night. I'm supposed to increase to 200mg after 1 more week but this dose seems fine for me for now. I don't take it for attention - I take it because the Lexapro I take zonks me out. Good luck - I think it's worth a try.

Thanks. It is always good to hear something positive about a medication. :)

I was still tired on 100mg. of Provigil. 200 mg. of Provigil works for me, but I was very hypersensitive while I adjusted to the higher dose.

Hi LisaMichelle -
How long have you been on Lex and at what dose? I've been on 10 then 20mg for the past 9 months and like the AD effect, but can't stand the sleepiness. So, my doc is switching me to Wellbutrin. I'd never heard of Provigil before. It sounds like it really works for a lot of sleepy people!

Thanks,
Lynne

Hi Lynne,
I've been on Lexapro for 5 weeks now at 10mg. I haven't really felt any effects yet but I wanted to wait about 9-10 weeks before I ask to increase the dose because I've read on here that it sometimes takes that long to feel the full effects. When I told my pdoc about the sleepiness he wanted to take me right off and put me on Effexor but after reading people's experiences here, I decided to stick it out on the Lexapro and try it with the Provigil at 100mg. For me, it was a lifesaver as I'm not obsessing all day about when I can take a nap. I am really tired in the morning still but it goes away once I'm up and moving after about an hour. Also, I switched to taking the Lexapro at night and I think that helped too. If I don't feel the good effects of the Lexapro I'll ask for a dose increase and probably a dose increase in the Provigil too.
If the Lexapro is working for you, maybe you could try the Provigil before switching to the Wellbutrin. Good luck and feel free to write if you have any further questions - I read a lot here before I went to my pdoc and it really helped to feel informed. He was even happy with me coming up with the Provigil idea and said he wouldn't have thought about it and was glad I did.
Take care,
LisaMichelle
