Society must be aware that Mental Illness is Real!

Posted by DanielJ on June 22, 2004, at 12:50:49

It is about a year ago that my 16 year old son had a breakdown that at first, none of us understood. We were not educated to the fact that Mental Illness can be hereditary and caused by chemical imbalances in the brain etc.
After our Psy Dr. prescribed medication for my son, and later when we found the combination that worked then we began to see the complete picture. M.I. is real and from diagnosis, to treatment, to cure or stabilization is the course that it should run. I don't think most people realize that this is a real problem for hundreds of thousands of individuals. It might take a few more celebrities with M.I. on Larry King or a few quality talk show appearances by someone famous to get the word out, but for Gods sake please let it happen soon.
With all the other minorities out there getting attention it is about time we get some positive press!

I'll continue this post to say that. Society is in denial of M.I.. That is why when it strikes an individual ie. a family, the system doesn't work to our advantage. There is a law here that if an individual is a danger to himself and/or others he may be admitted to a crisis center. This law is subject to interpretation by police and sometimes a person (under 16) may need to go to a crisis center but there is no way to get him there. I was told by the head of Nami that they had to leave their own son outside a crisis center and drive away at night time, so that he could be admitted and get treatment. (This Stinks! I mean having to virtually abandon your child in order to get treatment) There needs to be legislation in every state as well as the Fed. government to help people get treatment more easily and be able to receive the proper medications without spending their last dollar on them.

I agree with you entirely. Non depressed people don't understand depression. It is just like physical pain. When you are not in pain, it is extremely hard to conceptualize the suffering that a person with chronic pain endures.

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups not about medication to Psycho-Social-Babble. Here's a link:
