Zoloft increasing anxiety?

Posted by becksA on June 21, 2004, at 15:29:59

I'm currently on Zoloft 100 mg daily and Xanax XR 2mg daily for social anxiety. Is it true that an anti-depressant such as Zoloft can increase my anxiety?

Increased anxiety and even sever anxiety attacks are side effects of most SSRI's. This SE should subside by the 3 week.
Good luck.

I have been on the Zoloft for over 6 months now. I've always dealt with the social anxiety. I was just wondering if its doing more harm than good.

Zoloft for me increased my anxiety and never got better. I was actually afraid to walk into work a couple of times. My doctor warned me and said that he rarely gives Zoloft to people with anxiety. Lexapro had the similar effect with me, although Celexa did not at all, go figure.

Paxil is about the only SSRI that worked wonders for me for anxiety, unfortunatily because of sexual side effects I chose to drop it, or loose my girlfriend.

I've dropped SSRI's for now and am on Keppra and adding slowly Lamictal. The Keppra has been good so far with anxiety and the Lamictal will hopefully help with the mild depression, and no sexual side effects!

Seems to me SSRI's like Zoloft take a while to "settle in". The total benefits of a medication like this may take 6 weeks to arrive. In the mean time there can be disturbing side effects and changes (drowsiness, dopiness, slow reaction time, anxiety) They also cause acne in some individuals. It takes patience to ride out these distractions but in the long run in will probably pay off.
