Tardive Dyskinesia Info_ HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Posted by aspenice11 on June 21, 2004, at 3:04:02

My heart is pounding now and need some answers, please. I was on psychiatric drugs for about 2 1/2 years. I decided to come off them due to wanting to have a baby and plus they didn't work for me. Anyways, I am so scared right now. It wasn't until I was coming off these drugs that I decided to research them. I wish I would have done it before I went on them. I was on antipsychtics for a little less that 2 years, give or take. I have been off AP's for a little over 7 weeks and am worried that I am going to get tardive dyskinesia. I never knew or was told AP's could cause this. I was on zyprexa, seroquel and geodon. I wasn't on all of them at once. I was on geodon for the longest time, about 15 months. My doctor said that I will not get TD at this point but have read some articles that say up to 3 months after discontinuing and one said many months after discontinuing. Well, I was dealing with that until tonight. I was reading a thread on this site about TD and one person said that a Dr. Shipko said TD can show up after years of stopping the antipsychtic. My heart alsmost came thru my chest. I immediately started looking for that article he wrote but couldn't find it. Is there any truth to that at all? I live i fear everyday now thinking that I will get TD. I couldn't imagine living thru the next few years wondering if I will get this disease. I just want the truth. I am so upset. Thanks for listening and I look forward to hearing from you.

Jennifer

I think the chances are extremely remote that you will develop tardive dyskinesia at this point, as this almost always shows up while taking the antipsychotic or during withdrawal. Beyond that, the atypical antipsychotics you have been taking are much less likely to cause TD than the bad old psychotics like Thorazine and Haldol.

I think the real problem here is your anxiety about this matter. Having experienced severe anxiety myself in the past, I have some understanding of your mindset and can certainly remember getting all wound up and worried to death about an issue that from an objective perspective is simply not worth worrying about. I guess what I would offer here is that the extremely remote chance of getting the tardive dyskinesia is not the problem, it is the way you are reacting to the situation by excessively worrying about it that is causing you so much stress and anxiety right now. I mean this with no disrespect or criticism intended, as I understand all too well what you are going through from personal experience.

Hi Jennifer,

TD isn't cancer. In the unlikely event that you get TD it won't cause pain or shorten your life. Fear of getting TD will shorten your life however & your symptoms probably indicate that you have some OCD & GAD. I would ask your doctor about taking an SSRI to help with this problem. :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi Panda,
Thanks for the words. I will never go back on meds b/c of what side effects they caused me or might cause me in the future. I am scared of them. To tell you the truth, I wished I would have known about the side effects and so forth cause I would have never went on them in the first place. I know that I am still experiencing w/d and in time it will get better. I am going for counseling which I hope makes things better for me. You're right TD is not cancer but TD is very disfuguring and I wouldn't want to get it b/c my life would be ruined. I will keep in touch.

Hugs,
Jennifer

Why would these articles say that TD sometimes shows up after years of stopping the drug? Could they be wrong? I just want the truth.

The pictures of TD sufferers you generally see are of people that are psychotic & have been taking AP's at high doses for decades & represent the worst case scenario. The AP's you have been taking are notable in that they not often cause TD at high doses & don't cause TD at all at low doses. If you want my honest opinion, I would be more worried about them giving Diabetes. :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Panda,
You are great to talk to. I feel so stupid now. I went back to look for those articles and they werne't articles. They were both emails that said TD can show up after years. They weren't research. Sorry for being over excited. Sometimes my mind can run away from me. I thought the one post was from Havard b/c it was on nuerology website of harvard but it was a forum.

Thanks for listening and being patient with me,
Jennifer

No need to feel silly, most of us here seem to have some kind of compulsion, phobia or anxiety. I use to have a minor problem going to bed at night, I would compulsively check & recheck the doors were locked & power to things was turned off before going to bed. Since being medicated I now get by with checking everything just once. :)

Cheers,
Panda.
