Anyone taking Zonegran?

Posted by Mike634 on June 16, 2004, at 15:08:01

Hi, I have been dealing with a bad episode of bipolar deppression for a couple years now and have been taking Zonegran for the past month as a mood stabilizer. I think its working, but I am worried that it may be having some impairments on me cognitively - or that may just be the depression. Wondering if anyone else out there has had experience with zonegran - thanks!

Hi.

In what ways has Zonegran improved your condition?

I took Zonegran for about a week or so. When I developed severe itching, my doctor asked me to discontinue it for fear that it was an allergic reaction. I suffer from bipolar depression.

Thanks.

Hi Mike634,

I take Zonegran, 200mg at night. I don't have any cognitive side effects, so far as I can tell! This is the first mood stabilizer that has worked for me, and this is the best I have felt in years. It took about 2 months, I'd say, for me to start really feeling the full effects of it (that is, for my depression to lift).

What dosage are you taking, and are you taking anything else with it? I also take Effexor Xr.

Are the s/e of Zonegran similiar to Topamax? (nm)

NO! I have had NONE of the side effects with Zonegran that I had with Topamax, and the list was LONG. Some people complain of some cognitive slowing though, but I haven't experienced this. I HAVE experienced weight loss though, which is also common with Topamax. Otherwise, Zonegran is so much "cleaner" than Topa...I've gotten such a better anti-depressant effect from it, without all of the intense, overwhelming side-effects like I got from Topamax.

That's great news Sooshi! Did you have any problems switching from Topamax to Zonegran?

I am 200 mg of Zonegran (100 mg x 2 per day). I take it for neuropathic pain actually and compared to Topomax, it way way better.

I have had zero side effects from it. With topomax, my brain turned to mush. And I am experiencing more weight loss with Zonegran than I did with Topomax. It works great as an appetite suppressant although I don't actually need to lose weight anymore :(

(My guess is people are going to start using this as a diet drug once word gets out in the general population).

I had no trouble switching from Zonegran to Topa. I was told I could just stop the Topa, but I decided to taper down just to be safe. I tapered down 50 mg's/every 2 days (from 400mg), then started the Zonegran. And I'm so happy I started the Zonegran!
